Engine hoist booked for Monday 26th, i have allowed 2 days for any unforseen problems. After that will be fitting the front and rear screens, any tips? The screens are curved and have heard they can be a devil to fit.

One tip I picked up recently when someone was changing the rubber on a curved Chevy truck screen, was to mark the centre of the screen and put a mark in line with it above the screen, so that when you put the screen back in position, you know that it is central before trying to get it back into the rubber

I've never done a really curved screen like the PA, but strong cord and plenty of fairy liquid on the rubbers have worked in the past.

If you run into problems it may be worth making friends with an Autoscreens fitter, as they seem to have a variety of funny shaped tools for different shaped rubbers.

at least two pairs of hands in the vicinity too is highly recommended, for thumping, pushing etc!

Hi

I have never got the hang of the string idea, peraps one of you can help me out on that one? I prefer to just push and pull with my fingers, I also have used red rubber grease in the past.

Cheers

Being me, I always use a waxed Dolly Peg for this job... I wonder how many remember those?

When I took the screens OUT of my Lincoln, you'll never guess what I used for those!

Come on UJ don't keep us in suspense... I've got the front and rear screen rubbers to remove and replace on my old Somerset when I feel brave enough.

Believe it or not, a (home made) Weed Knife. Worked a treat! Suppose you all want a picture now, dont you?

Dave

Re the string idea

On both vehicles I have done this was the method:

Fit the rubber to the screen.
Measure and carefully mark the centre line.
Put the cord into the channel on the rubber where the body flange is going to go. The cord goes right round and should be knotted tightly with at least a foot of "ends" hanging out.
I use fairy liquid, but rubber grease would lubricate just as well. Put liberal quantities in the channel with the cord.
Place the screen over the hole.
With a helper on the outside to position and push the glass towards the hole, as you pull the cord out it will lift the "inside" flange of the rubber over the body flange.
Continue all round, going slowly at the corners, until the inner flange is totally inside the body work.

Talking to a couple of friends it seems to depend on the type of the rubber, and on some cars you fit the rubber to the body first and have the cord in the channel where the glass will go and work from the outside.

Then comes the harder bit on some cars - refitting any chrome trim without damaging it by bending or flattening.

This advice is given without any guarantees - so no claims if you break the screen!
