Got Jo out yesterday for the first run of 2011. Very Happy

Took it down to East Beach at Shoeburyness. Very cold!

Note the Boyce Motometer on the radiator, picked up at Vange for a bargain £15!

Thank you Fraser! Close up there's imperfections all over the place, it was restored in 1998 and not all the work was done to the best standard! But it hasn't let my dad down yet (although he's only done 100 miles or so in it in a year of ownership!)

What's a comfortable cruising "speed" in a 7? just curious really as the MM is happiest at 30-35mph, much more and things get a bit frantic Smile

Glorious little car Richard! I bet you thoroughly enjoyed the drive. Don't worry about imperfections, it's a motor car not an oil painting! Cars were meant to be driven and JO certainly looks very nice to me!

Rick; assuming flat roads, we usually drive at 35-40 mph in our Sevens. However, if the traffic is heavy, then great care is needed to maintain a decent distance between vehicles as the brakes are not anywhere near modern standards! Also approach traffic lights with extreme caution as Sevens do not like stopping in a hurry when lights change against you!

Pretty much the same Rick. Jo cruises at between 30-35mph, I think we have had 40 out of her a couple of times but that is pushing it a bit!

My dad's Ruby on the other hand, would cruise happily at 40mph+, although that has the later three bearing engine and a four-speed gearbox with synchromesh, as opposed to Jo's three speed with no synchromesh.

I notice with the MM that progress dips rapidly whenever an incline rears its head, requiring some deft foot- and hand-work to find a lower gear before momentum is lost altogether...

Yep that's the same! Also by the time you've double-declutched from second into top all momentum has been lost and it takes ages to pick back up again Smile

Oh the joys of vintage cars! I hope to buy my own one eventually, possibly a Standard 10/Flying Standard 8/12/14 or an Austin 10 Cambridge/12/16 Smile

The 8 takes a while to warm up and when it does get warmed up it will keep up with the slower local traffic. Probably around 45mph but it does roll around cornering.

Hi! To add a postscript to this thread I am buying Jo from the present owner, not Richard H, and will shortly move her to the Isle of Wight where I live. Previously I was this car's 3rd owner and had many a happy drive with her in the 1960s. Sadly I had to part with her then, but am expecting a very happy reunion and good times with Isle of Wight Austins. Mike J Very Happy

Excellent news. I'll let my dad know it's back in good hands!

Fancy it turning up after all these years! You must be thrilled to have it back Smile
