Over the weekend the National Museum of Scotland held its Magnificent Machines event at East Fortune Aerodrome. East Fortune has a very distinguished history. Apart from its role in WWII it was a very significant airship station with a couple of gigantic airship sheds, unfortunately long since demolished (although a very small part was re-used in a local bus garage). This was the base for the R34 which in 1919 became the first to successfully cross the Atlantic in both directions.

The Museum of Flight that now occupies the aerodrome site has a wonderful collection of aircraft ranging from the beautiful de Havilland biplanes of the 1930s (Rapide, Tiger and Puss Moth) through Spitfire, Messerschmit Comet and other WWII craft to more recent war planes including Vampire, Vulcan, Lightning, Harrier and of course Jaguar. There is also a complete hanger devoted to Concorde. Various Nissen Huts and other buildings provide further interactive delights associated with aircraft.

This weekend's event brought together traction engines, BMX bikes, monster trucks and cherished cars in addition to aerobatic displays and all the attractions of the flight museum.

Peter

Is that a VC10 fuselage behind Concorde? I've not checked, if I remember right did it come from the VC10 that was chopped up Mad at Cosford some years back - G-ARVM?

Hi Rick,

I confess that I didn't check it out but apparently it's the front of 707.

Ah righty, that used to reside at Cosford alongside the VC10 (and others) before being chopped up. Nice to see it in BOAC colours Cool as kids we had a walk around it at Cosford when it was still in BA livery.
