Is there enough interest here to warrant a section for preserved locomotives, and associated railway matters? It isn't a subject I know much about at all, but if there enough people here who'd be interested in contributing to such a section, making it a worthwhile addition, then please say so. If there's enough interest, I can give it a trial run (as with the aviation section).

thanks, RJ

Hi

Possibly, not my main interest area, but they are amazing up close and to listen too, the power they have.

One personal request mind, please don't mix Traction engines up with loco's.. If needed have a section for steam, then have Loco's as one sub catagory and have Traction Engines as a second sub catagory, But then I supose how many posts will you get, it may not be worth it.

I haven't ben much help here have I? hehe!

Cheers

Dave

I am interested in railways, as well as aviation. Although i love steam, and seeing the preserved loco's, my main interest is narrow gauge. This is smaller, less regulated and cheaper to be involved in. Going to do a bit of trackwork tomorrow, on the 18"gauge Steeple Grange Light Railway, in Wirksworth, Derbyshire. I have been a member for about 20 years now. On these smaller set ups, you do a bit of everything, track, trees, lineside weeds, selling tickets, maintenance and driving etc.
All good fun, and a very friendly little society.

Its worth a trial period. Maybe some of the ones who have never posted are interested in steam whether it be traction engines or railways. Personally I am interested in anything old that moves. Its worth a go.

Yes please! Anything that is mechanical and moves is of interest to me. As for steam, I have faint memories of riding behind one of the Flying Scotsmen locos in 1949 from London on the first stage of our moving to the antipodes. Of course I didn't know it was the F.S. at the time, but clues, like picking up water on the run, and the corridor connection between the tender and first carriage, tell me it must have been.

When the remaining F.S. Loco visited Australia in the 1980's, I was rather amazed at how small it looked against our own locos.

Not had much involvement with railways but like the days of steam.

Smile not forgetting the odd roadgoing coal-powered contraption Wink

I'll look into adding the new category shortly, if anyone in the meantime would like to kick off some new threads here on the subject of railway preservation, I'll move them over into the new category when it's in place.

thanks, R

You may have to re-name the site to:
Old Classic Car, Bike, Caravan, Plane, Rail & Loco ........ & Bus & Lorry & Van & Cart & Tram ...........co.uk

Anyway - perhaps some (vague) connection with Classic Cars could be a requirement.
As I'm sure you know, many steam preservation societies host car/truck etc club meets - to their mutual benefit.

GWS member since the 60's, Manx Electric since '95, Seashore Trolley Museum (USA) since '93 & West Somerset Railway supporter since I was a toddler & continuing to this day.

I think stipulating a link to cars in some way, for all rail-related topics, would restrict postings in a new category to be honest.

Going 'Off Topic' (there's a first!) Dave there is some info and pics about Dale Quarry, Wirksworth, which was owned by the WIRKSWORTH QUARRIES company in the link below.. My old gaffer used to work for them, it was accessed from the station yard via a tunnel under the town.

Pete.

Here is a start-up offering.

There were very few streamlined locomotives in Australia. One that became known nation-wide even though gauge differences meant it only ran in Victoria was the S class Of the Victorian Railways. They became known as the "Spirit Of Progress" locos and pulled a train of that name.

They were 3 cylinder machines with 'Pacific' wheel arrangement and were built in 1928/29. There were only four built. In 1937 all four were clad with a streamline casing and were used to draw the Melbourne to Albury express, from then on known as the "Spirit of Progress". Albury is on the border between Vic and NSW, where one had to change trains from the 5'3" Vic gauge to the Standard Gauge NSW metals.

Here is an S in original form-

and post 1937 streamlined-

The post 1937 colour scheme was blue with gold (yellow) lettering and trim.

Sadly, as diesel traction commenced, these were among the first steamers to disappear. They were scrapped shortly after being taken from service in 1954, however their large capacity tenders did live on for a while as water tanks.

Here is a link to 3 short film clips of the construction and inaugural run.
