Prior to and into the 1950's in Australia, many service stations were 'independant' and advertised themselves as such. They were 'Independant' in that they were not tied to any one petrol distributor, and therefore often sold several different brands.
Here is a photograph of Footscray Motors, in a suburb of Melbourne, on the (then) main road to Geelong and Ballarat. Notice that they sell Plume, Shell, Atlantic, C.O.R (Plus), and Texaco petrol.

Great photo Dane.
I wonder where the tanks were? There's no sign of manhole covers in the picture. Nice tall oil bottles.

Those oil bottles were supplied by Castrol in this country too, in pints and quarts. I used to have to fill them from the bulk cabinet when I was a boy.
Although Weights and Measures used to check the petorl pumps regularly, they never bothered with the oil pumps or the bottles. |

I had two of those bottles that came with my first car - fitted nicely in the under-bonnet tool box. Hand-crank refilled every few weeks at the local Lubritorium - now there's a word one doesn't hear very often. _________________ Mike - MVPeters at comcast.net

In the UK. as long as the contents of the bottles were sold "by the bottle" and not as "pints" or "quarts" The Weights and Measures people were not involved.
In general the oil sold from cabinets was measured in checked and stamped oil cans. The cabinet pumps were not calibrated.
Jim - who also filled the bottles of Castrol and Shell. _________________ Quote from my late Dad:- You only need a woman and a car and you have all the problems you

Jim, I suspect that you and I are of an age, and with very similar experiences. If ever we were to meet, we'd talk for ever! |
