As a nipper it was aircraft, rather than cars, that really interested me, probably due to having Manchester Airport (Ringway) plus two annual airshows in the area (Barton and Woodford). I started collecting toy aircraft a little while back, and while I concentrate mainly on four wheel toys, I do still like to pick up the occasional aero. For starters, a battery powered tin plate Lockheed Constellation, in BOAC colours, made by Marx and dating I'd guess to the 1950s.

Beautiful! I remember ones similar to that, but were later (1960s) jets in Pan Am or Eastern trim. I now collect Lear jet models. Only a few, but the collection includes 2 RC craft with near 5 foot wingspan, an inflatable, a wood carved one, and a couple diecast.
Do you have any more pictures of your others?

like it gto! my brother collects rc aircraft, there are some amazing models hanging up at my folk's place. I'll take a camera next time I go over. As for later toy jets, I've got a pair of 707s, one in BOAC colours, the other (boxed) one in TWA. I remember having a Pan Am 747 as a kid, sadly that didn't survive Sad

Slightly older, a large-ish tinplate DC7 Cargo in the colours of American Airlines. I have some props in a box, just need re-affixing

Those toy planes are getting up in value at antique & toy auctions now a days. Planes and trucks fetch big money any more.
If I`d only known when I was a kid, I`d have SAVED all those old toys, LOL!

High time this thread was updated, so next, two plastic toy aircraft from the early 1950s. They measure 7.5 - 8ins in length. I don't know the manufacturer sadly. Both feature friction drive motors, and incorporate a spinning wheel onto which lies a flint (I assume). Rev them up and sparks fly out of their cockpits, very Dan Dare!

The first is based on the Avro 707, a test aircraft used to develop the delta wing later utilised on the Vulcan:

And this machine, which has echoes of Gloster E28 and Meteor about it I reckon:

Just thought I'd bump this one back up again, in case any recent joiners also collect toy or model aircraft?

I've never seen one with folding wings like that, very nice.

The clockwork doesn´t work but I think it would drive the wheels and the prop. The number would suggest to me the 30s or 40s. Would be nice to know who made it and the approx date of manufacture. It´s a bit beat up and rusty but that is all part of the charm I think....

K5083 was the prototype of the Hawker Hurricane,
That might help date the model.

Mind you it's obviously not a hurricane copy, well I hope not

Possibly manufactured by Mettoy in the UK, Several of their models feature the letter K on the wings. Some of the history of Tippco and Mettoy names are in the second link.

If you look - or rather squint - at some of the features (folding wings apart), you can see a hint of Hurricane(ish) going on there, cockpit shape etc.

True but the thing that suggests not to me is the -rotory- engine. Mind you there there has always been a lot of styling -licence- when it came to kids toys Smile

So it looks like it´s Mettoy from before the war....

Perhaps the folding wings were nothing more than a simple way to get the thing into a box. Perhaps the aircraft experts here can comment, but surely this precedes any swing wing development and aren't the aerodynamics of the fold back wing wrong ? Swing wings go to a delta shape. In the swept back position the rear wing flaps wouldn't work.

Idea or maybe it was modelled on a secret plane that could fly backwards. Wink

Regardless, it is a great toy to own.
