I have just bought an alvis ta14 in generally good condition, mechanically sound and had the interior all re trimmed.. Just needs a good paint job now whats the going rate for one these days? Does anyone know much about the alvis's? This is my first classic car i have got an old caravan and few vintage tractors Smile

The cost of the paint job can be much reduced if you do all the stripping down of panels and building up again afterwards. If you take the panels down to metal you can probably find someone who will paint it for about a grand.
OK, I'm not the world's leading authority on paying for jobs; anyone else care to venture an opinion? Maybe someone who has actually paid for a paint job recently?
Congrats by the way - nice cars.

Sounds interesting! If it's on the road I'd be inclined to run it for a while if possible, to determine if any major mechanical bits need work while the car is being stripped/prepared for paint.

Have a look at Jason's "Little Mary Anne" in "other cars". If that doesn't inspire you, then you need to sell the car!!

My Jaguar Mark 2's paintwork has microblistered on all it's horizontal surfaces following a respray in 1996. I have been quoted £1800, give or take, subject to any unforseen problems, by one of the best bodyshops here in North Wales. The price will include the removal and refitting of both inner and outer sills on the nearside and repositioning them properly.

I must deliver the car to the 'shop in bare metal, which I will prepare myself, with only a thin black phospate coating - which will come off anyway. I am providing 10 litres of my own quality (ICI Autocolour) two pack colour coat which I have in stock.

I have been quoted less by others but as with most things, you get what you pay for. The work will include a one year written guarantee.

I hope that the foregoing will be some sort of a guide for you.

Congratulations on buying the Alvis. A local hotel owner had one in a golden sand colour for years. Beautiful cars.

congratulations on your purchase, any photos?

I was quoted £2500 for for a paint job on mine but that included all the prep work.....a bit expensive so I painted mine myself with cellulose and got great results.

heres some before and after photos of mine....

that was the colour after the restoration......she now looks like this...

anything you need to know, just ask and I'll try to help.

have you joined the Alvis owner club?

Thank You all for your help. Here is a few pictures of mine. I run a little blasting company and have done a few cars for a good body shop he does older top end stuff like lea francis's, 40's lancias ect so i am going to strip the wings off and blast them and the bonnet, strip the doors to then hes going to rub down the body and paint it for me. The pictures look good, but there are a few cracks in the paint work on the front mud guards i suspect bit of filler is in there and its quite orange pealy in general.. The interior has all been re done apart from the head lining which i will get done.. Any info or help on them would be great! I havent joined alvis owners club as of yet.. Here are some pictures i hope they work!

Looks very tidy, the interior especially is fab.

I'll move this to the Your Cars... section if that's ok, also where Jason's thread and others like it live.

I'd be using it like that. It would have to get a whole lot worse before I repainted it.
If you are towing your caravan with it you don't want a shiny scared-to-use-it car.

Yes thanks fine thank you.. It looks better in the pictures than it is, i would rather have it done over the winter so i can enjoy it next summer.. The front wing is cracking and doesnt have beading init neither do the rear arch's. They are quite a few stone chips that have been badly touched in too. The interior was recantly done seats and carpets need to get headlining though which i will and give the door cards a good clean!

We did or TA14 headlining ourselves....we were given silly quotes to do it by local companies. We got lovely stretchy union cloth from Woolies, stitched a seam left to right down the centre, stapled it to the wooden surround for the now welded shut sunroof, and just made it up from there. It's not super brilliant , but it's ok for the sixty quid we spent on fabric!

Bit of an update on the alvis i will upload pictures when i can, its been at the upholsters and had all new carpets made, fitted and a new headlining done also the door cards have been done the same colour as the seats. Its going in for paint in the first week of january so i am on with stripping it now. The passenger side wing came off with no real problems you can see its been repaired before on the back ofit but should be a good wing. The drivers side was a different story it was held on with filler and looks shot i am going to try and source a new wing for the drivers side. Does anyone know if the sills are fiberglass? I have taken the paint off the door shut and it appears to be metal but the curved bit appear to be fiberglass can anyone clarify this?

Regards Tom
