As in interesting at the time, or maybe run-of-the-mill at the time, but now regarded as interesting?
I've only ever been on 737s of varying ages, plus a few single engine small jobs as a youth, and a couple of helicopters.
Anyone here been on what are now regarded as classic jets or propliners? eg Tridents, VC10s, Comets, Britannias, Constellations, DC3s etc or even Concorde??

When I was an field engineer in the 90's , we used to get Shorts 360's to the Isle of Man, Islanders (3 prop jobs) in the channel islands, and ATP's (Advanced Turbo Props or All the Technical Problems!!!) from Manchester up to Scotland, + there was a 8 ish seat prop job (can't remember the name) a scheduled flight from Liverpool to Southampton , also Fokker 50's that used to fly from Liverpool to London City and then on to Antwerp.
All a bit more entertaining than jets! not sure if you would call any of them classics?

A couple of years ago my daughter and son in law gave me a trip in a Dragon Rapide for my birthday.

A friend of mine who was mad keen on Concorde took a flight in it.

He was keen on memorabilia too and dearly wanted a Concorde umbrella that he'd seen but these were apparently staff only so he commissioned a company to make him some replicas. Given the minimum order quantity this cost him quite a bit but he subsequently sold those he didn't want on eBay and made a small profit overall.

Took a connecting flight in the late 1980's and to my amazement the next plane was a DC3. This flight was a regular route between Kinshasa and Brazzaville. Even more amazing was the number of old planes in various states of rot at the side of Kinshasa airfield.
The DC3 flight took about 20mins to cross the Congo to Brazzaville. I seem to remember thinking I hope it stays in the air and where do they get the spares from!! However, one of the more interesting flights I have taken.
A de Havilland Twin Otter, (not sure if it was that old, 1980's again) in the jungle. Had to close the road to allow the aircraft to take off, and boy, were you glad it took off!!
A Balco helicopter in the early 80's. Cannot seem to find anything about them though..just pictures. Sat next to the pilot as it crabbed along in high winds. |

My first flight was from Birchanger, now Stanstead, on 10-09-1963 in a Britannia to Singapore with two stops on route, one was Ceylon forget the other.
And return trip three years later in the exact same, by coincident, Britannia
Singapore to Kuching Borneo a few times, mostly in a Hastings, also in a Blackburn Beverley and an Argosy.
A few supply drops in Borneo in DC3's and Valletta's.
Some hair raising antics in a Wessex in Germany
Leave and de-mob flights in a Vickers Viscount
Most weekends in the 70's and 80's in one of two Tiger Moths and a Rolloson Condor out of Biggin Hill.
Missed a flight in Concord, won a ticket in a local petrol station draw.
The said flight was cancelled and waiting for a re booking was, shall we say, cancelled due to history.
PS. got £450 cancellation payment |

Rick,
I have flown in three of your selection. Trident, Comet 4B, VC10 and also a DC10 and Lockheed L1011. All except the Comet had a really high nose up attitude (stall angle??) when landing. The most exciting had to be the Air Maldives DeHaviland Otter taking off in a moderate swell, skipping from wave crest to wave crest, the pilot in his barefeet .

In the early '50s I flew out to Malta with my Mum in a BEA Viking. We had to land at Marseilles (so my memory tells me but it might have been Nice) to refuel and I was sick on my teddy bear - I was only little....
I don't know which plane it was but there's a Viking at Brooklands - tiny by comparison with today's jets.

I had a few flights in Chipmunks back in the late 1960's flying out of Turnhouse Airport (Edinburgh) when I was an ATC Cadet.
Tiny little aeroplane, but huge fun for a towny like myself. |

Used to fly from Columbus to Mansfield Airport in a DH Riley (Dove) back in the 80s. Made the journey regularly when visiting my employers main plant in the US. It was known locally as 'the puddle jumper.' On one occasion we travelled from Mansfield to NY state in the company Learjet. _________________ Due to the onset of my mid eighties I'm no longer sprightly and rarely seen in my Austin special. First flight was in a Tiger Moth. 1965 I think. Shoreham. In the Army I´ve flown VC 10, Wessex (absailing) and Sioux (Augusta Bell. Last versions of the Bell Trooper of M:A:S:H: fame). Jumped once from a C47 (DC 3) at a show the Regiment were taking part in. Jumped also from Argosys and Andovers (military version of HS 748). Missed the Beverley and the Hastings. Most of my jumps of course from a C130 Hercules. Last time I flew a Herc was with the Swedish Air Force on the way back from the first gulf war in 91.
Landed a Sioux 3 times (unfoffically). Wanted to join the AAC but tinnitus stopped me (nail bomb Irland). Did 6 months with the UN Flight of Siouxs just across from Nicosia Airport in 72-73
