Ok here go's -- got an old morris 8 tourer 2 seater now sat in the barn awaiting restoration start.
I have never attempted anything this big before. Its pretty rotten so will need a lot of fabrication work especially on the chassis, the body work is not to bad wood frame is in pretty poor condition but the car must be 98% complete so should have no trouble with patterns etc... plus its only 1 previous owner probably not been on the road for over 50 years just been sat standing.
So the first job now is to have a clear out of all my motor bike projects not started and completed ones to make space. I aim to start stripping the car down in March and find out how bad the chassis really is.
So whilst photo graphing the bikes to sell tomorrow i will take some photos of the car in its original starting condition and post them.
Have i gone mad or taken on one project to big? |

Looking forward to seeing the pics. Can you also graph your bank account over the next year or so so that I can judge the decline in funds and compare it to my own project? Lol
Just kidding. Pics during restoration are great. Here's my '46 Morris 8 Series E Saloon.

Hi and welcome to the Forum
You should be able to get plenty of advice here if you need it.
I would also advise you to join the Morris Register. They have the club website plus a forum similar to this although it is not as active. They also have regular monthly meets in most areas around the UK so getting advice or a quick look at how something should be is never a problem.
As regards spare parts "Ian Harris Morris Spares" is probably the main place to go plus EBay. (I have had good results here although other forum members have experienced problems from time to time.)
I know what you mean about other projects! I have put on hold my Square 4 rebuild until I have sorted the engine out on the Morris!
If you get a chance to post photos everyone on the forum appreciates them.
Good luck and remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question....only a stupid answer!
All the best

Hi Graham,
Welcome to the forum and to the challenges ahead, of which I am sure will be many (as several others on this forum would attest).
Photos are great to compile even if you don't post alot of them on the forums but a cheap digital camera is an invaluable resource to capture your before photos to help you with achieving a good result in the after photos. I have taken literally dozens of before photos from various angles to aid in the restoration process.
But please post a couple of before photos as it gives other members an insight as to what may lay ahead for you. I also concur with Alec in that joining the local Morris Register is a very worthwhile exercise as you will recieve plenty of encouragement and advice, and if anything like the Morris Register of South Australia you will find a fine group of very like minded people to socialise with.
Good luck with the resto...

Have taken some photos so will work out how to up load them over this week end.
The space making project in the Barn is going well and i have offers now for most of my old bikes. currently i cant get to the morris for all the other stuff i have stacked around it.
I actually have some empty shelfs, benches and boxes so hopefully in a couple of weeks time well may be a couple of months i will slowly start to strip the car down.
When the clearout is finished I will have enough space to store all the mechanical bits on shelfs and benches and have enough space to work on the chassis and the body all in the same building.
A question - is there anywhere i can get exploded drawings showing all the parts etc..
i have also found a couple of web sites with detaills on rebuilds and stripdowns etc.. what is the best ones? |

HI,
Are you a member of the Modrris Register? There are oads of technical documents you can access on their site as well as getting lots of advice from the 8mvs email sysytem. I found them invluable when restoring my car:
see:' Morris 8 my first restoration' on this OldClassicCar site.

finally success in loading a photo
been out in the barn this weekend emptying the car of all the bits even found the original semphones in the bottom of the car plus the exhaulst bits all the fittings for the windscreen and the handles bumpers etc.. it was all there
That was the good news
The even better news is the floor is pretty much rotted out as expected but the reason the car is on a angle is the transition piece between the chassis and the body is rotted out completly but the chassis is there allthough rusty quite bad in place it looks to be intact complete with all the suspension components
But there is one hell of a lot of work to do!! |

Wow that's a project and a half great to see it.
If I were you I'd gen up by reading as many books as possible on the subject, not just on Morris 8s but also coachwork. Then I'd ask around and find someone who has a car that can be photographed, so that you know how a complete car should look, from above and also from underneath. If possible try and find a car that's original and sound, even if not yet restored, to study. Are there any factory drawings around showing the body construction?
There's a risk that diving in and stripping it all down at the beginning might be a bit overwhelming - ebay regularly has stripped projects up for grabs for just this reason I suspect!! Better - IMHO - to try and deal with one sub-section at a time, rather than everything in one go.
Look forward to seeing more pics if you have any??
RJ
PS what's the old motorcycle in the background? _________________ Rick - Admin

Not unlike my own M8 Tourer project Yours is not a Tourer, the tourer is a 4 seater, yours is a Morris 8 2 Seater; the best looking of all the M8's IMHO!

Hi Graham,
Good to see you have had a win posting your first pickie
Looks like all it needs is a wash and a polish - then she'll be as good as new.......
Seriously all you need to do is one step at at a time. Good to plan to do a little at a time and prepare a lot in advance.
As Rick has said above see if you can see some sound examples for reference. A good idea is to join your local Morris Club and get to meet some of the gang and find out who has similar cars to study. You will find a wealth of information and some good war stories from the members most over a cuppa or a beer or three
But so long as it's an Eight it doesn't matter how many seats it has - they all look good

I began with the same last year. If you are near Bristol then get in touch.
Morris Register is invaluable. So much generosity and a great source of spares and interest. 100 years of Morris this year.
Watch out for Kenmorris on ebay. I would buy through MR. There are plenty of bits about for almost the whole car but do take loads of photos to help with rebuilding. Try and remove the inserts from front chassis sides to get at all the rust and dirt. Likewise the chassis side plates. The Information Manual at £10 from MR is gold.
Great little cars.
