I've not had a proper prod about yet, but when I've cleared the decks with the other stuff a little, I'll revisit the problem.

I know very little about these Austins, how do they differ mechanically from later 10s, such as the Lichfield and so on? I notice when parts are advertised that they either relate to the chrome rad 32-34 cars, or else the painted rad later ones, and I often wonder how they differ mechanically??

yeah it was a lucky find, only 2 or 3 owners from new and off the road (except for one journey) since the mid 60s. Structure is aok, doors open and shut perfectly (which I wasn't expecting!!). Heres a pic of the engine, I think the previous owner said it has a later carb on it, although there is another one in the boot with it!!

Rick, you do have the later (possibly Cambridge) carb and manifold. Its a very worthwhile mod as the original sidedraught and seems to restrict the performance.
The engine and gearbox differ very little from the 10/4 to the Cambridge and are interchangeable up to the advent of the GS1 in the postwar 10.
Early cars have a crash gearbox and a rather troublesome clutch, I think that by 34-5 they had fitted a more conventional clutch and rudimentary synchromesh.
Late engines had shell bearings and I think the Cambridge had an ali head (ugh).
If you have to remove the engine it comes out, complete with gearbox from under the car.
The best mod I did on mine was to convert it to 12v.
When I get a minute I will send some photos.

p.s. I have been out in the old girl this morning, the brake pedal on the Sprite has seized.

Its interesting just how different these oldies are to work on, even when compared to 50s stuff - like setting the points was very different if I remember right

thanks for the info on engine/box removal, I might end up removing the latter, hope that the engine can stay where it is though as that seemed to run reasonably well

Here is the engine compartment of my 10/4 showing a few mod's.
As you see there is a downdraught carb and manifold fitted to improve performance.
The rubber hose is non-standard and goes to the tappet cover in order to 'recycle' blowpast.
There is a large dynamo that came from an Armstrong Siddely which provides 12 v through a standard AVC, and note the adaptor and 4 bladed fan to improve cooling when towing the caravan. http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t103/donthebat/104engine.jpg

Dashboard of 10/4. A few more mod's. Old Landrover indicator unit modified to fit, used to go down to pub in dark and after trying to turn right on a major road using hand signals and nearly getting 'wiped out' I felt something had to be done. The indicator lamps are from an old Honda motorcycle.
The clothespeg on the choke shaft is absolutely essential on this model, have never seen a 10/4 withoutone. The general 'tattyness' is the product of 21 years of regular use, you should se the state of the new cars I bought throught the same period!1http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t103/donthebat/104dash.jpg

Thanks for taking the photos, interesting to compare underbonnet shots! when I start looking at the Austin in detail (probably when I've got either a Devon or Bedford pickup out of the way) I'll pick your brains re removing the gearbox, just in case there are some tricks I need to know Smile

I'll take some more detailed pics of mine when I can, and put them up on here - its a bit crammed in the garage, but I should be able to get near enough with the camera Rolling Eyes

For those at a loss as to what your old car should be used for? May I suggest a champagne picnic with friends on the local Minnis. Please note the wind-up gramaphone behind me with 78s of Al Bowly and the like.
Regrettably the tables and chairs are something of a anachronism and probably came from B&Q and the picnic basket fell off the carrier on the way home.
It's all my fault for using 70 year-old leather straps !! http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t103/donthebat/Whatoldcarsarefor.jpg

this was in the local commercial vehicle road run, posted elsewhere but seems appropriate to place it here too, a 10/4 van (with windows added in the 50s)

Great van, the first car I ever tried to drive was a similar vehicle, must have been in 55 or 56.
I have a photo somewhere of a 10/4 doctors coupe that is not all it seems.
Will post when I find it.

Here is a 'one-off' 10/4: It belonged to a friend of mine called Monty Mason, who died last year.
Monty had it from the 60s when it was used as everyday transport and at that time it was a "two seater with dickey".
As I understand it; the hood needed replacement and rather than spend a lot of money on a new one, Monty cut the rear of the cab off an Austin 7 and grafted on to the 10/4 to made a weatherproof coupe.
Not happy with the performance Monty also fitted a series 'A' A40 engine and transmission in place of the old sidevalve engine and crash box.

Monty used this car every day up until just before his death. http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t103/donthebat/Montys10-4.jpg

Not done much to the cabrio of late, but received this nice old pic of a 10/4 tourer the other day, and have just added it to the site

Also heard from someone who has a 10/4 Cabrio restoration project, I'm hoping he'll join up to the forum sometime soon Smile
