Three more old photos to add in, before they get put away in a file here at OCC HQ ...

1. Two ladies and a sailing boat, printed as a postcard but with no further info available.

2. Stern-on view of the Rose Of Devon, pre-war by the looks of it. An image search on Google brings up a photo of a similar boat with this name, in Salcombe.

3. The smallest in this trio of old photos has a few notes on its reverse, although I've yet to fully decipher the name of the vessel shown ... S.S. Manhaar perhaps?

Hi
The yacht pictures have a look of the Fowey river to me, but I must admit that this hill to the E of Salcombe is a good match.

Yachts, as in two different boats.

How true Peter, the single masted one is possibly a sloop, we can't see if it is rigged for 2 foresails, which would make it a cutter.
The 2 masted one is a Ketch or a Yawl but I can't see whether the rudder post is forward of the Mizen (Ketch) or aft of it (Yawl), which ever it is it appears to be gaff rigged.

Four more random photos to re-awaken this thread ...

This one is particularly interesting to stare at (I think anyway), as there's some good detail in the photo. The life rings bear the name John Paterson (a politician), and the location of Cape Town.

The following page appears to refer to it: http://www.tynetugs.co.uk/johnpaterson1882.html
and there's another photo here:

Comments: 1892: David Reynolds wrote: "Even the proud commissioners of the Port Elizabeth Harbour Board
had to confess that they had bought a 'lemon' in the John Paterson, a cranky, ill-tempered wooden paddle steamer with controls so complicated as to be almost unworkable. Within ten years of her arrival in the bay on December 11, 1882 she was put up for sale, with particular emphasis on the 'no reserve' provision."
1904: Converted for pleasure cruises with promenade deck, unofficially known as CAPE GIRL
10/06/1906: Bullard King steamer UMBILO sighted JOHN PATERSON off Danger Point
She was in a heavy gale and sinking. She was taken in tow but the towrope broke
Next day all crew taken off in 34.40S 18.57E except the captain, who refused
No trace subsequently found and presumed foundered
Thanks to David Asprey for the above details

From the above information, it would seem the photo was taken between 1904 and 1906?
Plus, the 'location' would have been Port Elizabeth?

Hi
Juli is German for July and the flag looks to be Black over White over Red which was a German Empire flag from 1871 to 1918.

Hi
I have a suspicion that picture 2 is the Thames/Victoria Embankment reach between Temple Pier (foreground) and the old Waterloo Bridge (and Thames Police Station) in the background..
