That's how i understand it Roger, these Spitfires were just never unpacked, and buried in their travel crates. David Cundall has spent 17 years tracking these aircraft, and i sincerely hope he is successful eventually. There are three sites i understand, each marked with a pile of stones. Perhaps they are not yet in the right location. Good luck to the team.

It seems they did find a crate full of muddy water which turned out to hold water pipes and things.
They were quoted as saying they were going to investigate another site. But as you say it has gone quiet.
Jim.

Last night on the British Forces News there was a report.

It seems it has been a myth,

I am still hoping for this legend/story/myth/pack of lies, to be true. After so much work over the years, David Cundall must be very disappointed right now.
Anyway, for anyone who hasn't heard, a spitfire that does exist now.
BBMF has a "new"Mk XVIe for the 2013 season. TE311, was a 1945 built one, from Castle Bromwich works, delivered 1 month after WW2 ended. It has been a gate guardian, road travelling exhibit, and spares source for 58 years, before being subject to a long restoration. It's a clipped wing, Packard powered version, and was one of the taxi only ones in the film Battle of Britain, disguised as a high back Mk1.

My Dad was in Burma in WW2 , he passed on to me a load of Spitfire electrical stuff, that I still have. I don't know if this was from new or scrapped plane's ?

I wonder if that means there will be 2 new ones on the display circuit this year Mk IX RR232, in private ownership, has been rebuilt and flew out of Filton just before it closed

One of the reports linked to above says they were never sent, the other says they all came home - one of them must be wrong.

I heard a rumour, many years ago, that at the end of WW2 pits were dug on many UK RAF airfields and surplus kit including planes and army tanks bulldozed in and covered over. Is that rumour true, I've no idea - anyone have a metal detector?

Heard yesterday the search has been called off; which must be a weight off the minds of current owners who have invested so much time and money into restoration.

I've heard of that too - the fields behind Ringway (Manchester) airport are supposed to have a few relics underneath them. Things tend to get dumped into large holes when they're beyond recall, so I see no reason why airframes couldn't go the same way.

I don't know about aeroplanes, but two old soldiers I have known were involved with burying surplus equipment after WWII. One was based in Cornwall where they pushed vehicles down disused mine shafts. They then had to throw bails of burning straw on top of the vehicles. The other guy was attached to the Americans at Ashchurch where they dug great holes and buried everything. He later went on to decomission a U.S. hospital in Wales where tons of stuff was buried

Archives now show that even the weather, and lack of equipment, was not compatible to the burial of the spitfires.

Makes one wonder if any propper investigation was carried out before this saga.
How come all of a sudden all these documents have come to light.
Someone didn't do their homework.

There's a crossroads over Marple way which, I'm told, has a steam traction engine under the surface. A mill in North Wales has a bevy of 50s classics under its car park too, according to a local (elderly) sage.

I once went looking for an E83W van, also in North Wales. I found the farm, and was directed to a grassy mound not far from the farm entrance Smile

Our local paper, Derby Telegraph, said last night, that David Cundall would continue his quest for these aircraft. He is confident of obtaining funding, although it doesn't say where from, as the video games company has pulled out. It would be good to see him succeed, although the odds against it seem to be lengthening.
