Can someone ID the turbo prop in the opening credits just before the Viscount though? The cockpit looks Cometish.

If you mean just after the meteor take off.
Not turboprop.
It's the Bristol Brabazon.

Thanks for that, of course it was, I just picked up those intakes and thought Turboprop because the prog was about jets.
Even worse i should have recognised the shape of those intakes as it was always claimed that the 404, 405 and 406 Bristol car rad intakes were modelled on the Brabazon style

The comments about schoolboy knowledge in the fifties brought back memories. I was there. I still remember that the Saab Draken could climb faster than any of the British jets in the early 1950s. And the Supermarine Swift was faster than the Hawker Hunter. And I could go on and on.
Wonderful days. I enjoyed this immensley.

I've just spent a very happy hour watching it. I grew up with those jets at various RAF stations where my Dad was based: Strubby (Lincs.), Lyneham (Transport Command but with a Maintenance Unit servicing Meteors), Khormaskar (Aden), Masirah (middle of nowhere) and later Laarbruch and Bruggen (Germany).
I remember Venoms and Meteors flying overhead as if it was yesterday, seeing the Black Arrows loop twenty two Hunters and watching a Lightning stand on its tail and shoot skywards - both at Farnborough.
Such memories - happy days...

Last week's part 1 of Jet! is repeated this week, Tuesday evening 11pm on BBC4, if you missed it last week.

Part 2, looking at post-war commercial aircraft, is being shown this Wednesday, BBC2.

Dig WW2 on BBC2 (first of three parts being shown this week) has just finished and was also fascinating, it looks like the two remaining parts will be well worth a watch also.
