Hi All
Just arrived back from an interesting journey from Hammersmith to Wakefield in my newly acquired A60 Countryman! It has had a full body and mechanics restoration by a professional restorer but requires the chrome work and interior to be completed.
As it has only done approx 50 miles since the engine re-build, I needed to take it steady up the M1 - oops the speedo's not working. The fuel gauge was on empty so I filled it up at the nearest garage only for the gauge to stay on empty! A couple of minor wrinkles that I'll soon sort out.
It drove very well on the trip up north with the wipers coping well in the heavy rain.
Now, how long should I wait to change the oil after the re-build? It had a good 190 mile run up from London so do I do it now or leave it until about 500 miles?

Thanks Larry.

Even more rare as it's only done 17,000 miles, having been left in a garage for 20 years.

For the cost of a filter and some 20/50 I'd be inclined to replace the oil now, and again a few hundred miles down the line.

Sounds like a good find Smile

Yes, I think you're right. I've just looked at the original service voucher book and receipts with the first oil change done at 500mls but now seems a good time to me. Interestingly enough, the speedometer was replaced at 6 miles.

Coincidentally, within the last few minutes I had someone contact me who is trying to trace the current owner of his father's old A60 Countryman, reg BKS 540C. He spotted a photo of it online, at a recent show. His dad bought it new in 1965.

Sadly not mine, it's a 68.

Delay with the photo's as it needs a shine to remove 2 years of garage grime.

Fixed the fuel gauge sender - the pivot was stuck down after many years of no fuel.

Found that the speedometer cable is broken at the gearbox end - new one ordered.

Great, I'll let the son of the original owner know.

I'll PM you his email address, would you mind forwarding it to the current owner please?

thanks, R

I like to get rid of the oil and filter after about 50 miles or so. Gets out the first of the filings from breakin and the dirt from not having been built in a clean-room.

Then about 500 to 800 miles later will finish most of the break-in debris.

I hope I've got this right and my photos should appear below.

I finally sorted the speedo, the broken cable was due to the internal speedo drive being seized solid. Plenty of lubrication and encouragement has freed it up so it's re-installed with a new seal and bezel.

A problem I do have is with tailgate seals. Does anyone know the correct profile for them? Earlpart have none but surely there must be a reference work for them somewhere. The ones on the car don't look original or in the right place.
