Absolutely stunning - a skill well worth envying (in a nice way).
Thank you for sharing as its such an interesting thread because I'm toying with the idea of attempting building a large scale model, but purely static, not for flight - more of a challenge really to keep me busy. |

Hi Scotty, what do you fancy building? I might be able to help with scale drawing etc.

This large scale SR-71 is impressive, it handles very well. The German guy who built it also made the the jet engines.

Many thanks for your generous offer, however I was going to take the plunge by buying a full kit with all the components pre-cut and required hardware included. Whilst I can hold my own with plastic models its been a long time since I dabbled with balsa kits and this being the first one I've bought in over 40 years I would like it as painless as possible. |

Next installment, move forward a war, and change sides!! Here's a few pics of a couple more from the Messerschmitt factory. First is a 1/5 scale Bf 109E-4, modelled on Adolf Galland's Battle of Britain machine from the summer of 1940. This was powered by a Laser 150 V twin fourstroke, about 24cc. It featured an opening canopy, sliding windows, scale exhausts, leading edge slats plus all the scale hinging etc.
plus this one in a none scale setting!!

....then a ME262. This is one of the largest projects I've been involved in, and by far the most expensive, luckily it wasn't paid for by me as it was done for a 3rd party. It was built to a scale of 1:2.5 and spans nearly 16 feet. Powered by two gas turbine engines of about 50lb thrust each. The model weighs in at 180 lb or so if my memory serves me right. It carries around 16 litres of Jet A1 in the scale fuel tanks in the fuselage, one in front and one behind the cockpit. This fuel is gone in just over ten minutes!! It also features pneumatic undercarriage retraction and wheel brakes and an on board compressor to ensure there is enough wind to get the undercarriage down again. Here's the pics, Ian.

Ian,
I am in absolute awe! I'm very glad you found this forum too and am sure any further contributions like the above will be more than welcome by me and most of the other members.
If ever I find myself in a "Flight of the Phoenix" situation then I sincerely hope that you are on board.
Do you make drones?

By sheer good fortune as I was hunting for a large scale balsa kit, at the moment the Gloster Gladiator, I stumbled upon a model flying club as I was searching the net doing my homework and surprise, surprise its based 5 minutes drive from my house - didn't even know it was there!
I've been to introduce myself and see what's what over the last couple of weeks and they're a friendly bunch suggesting companies that are worth visiting on the net and what I need to do and need if I decide to build the kit as a flying model, not just a static one.

Some very nice models especially the WW2 Heinkel Jet & Messerschmitt.
The vid of the SR71 spyplane was cool, that plane is awesome, and i belive the original plane still holds the record for fastest plane in the world. _________________ http://www.eurods.eu/wp/index.html |

Cheers for the interest and comments chaps, I thought I'd bored you to tears!!
The 262 in flight pics were taken at RAF Shawbury in Shropshire where the test flights were made. That derelict house in the landing pic looks like the Schwalbe could be a returning after another unsuccessful sortie to protect the 'Fatherland'. All of the test flights were completed in the day since the 262 performed flawlessly throughout the day, the wind starting off very strong and calming off nicely at half time. There is no pilot fitted at this stage since I hadn't finished it All toy aeroplanes need a dolly in the cockpit, at least for the flying bit!! So here's Gerhard before he went into the 'office'. There are a few vids on youtube too, I'll find a couple. The best thing about this model is the sound of the two huge turbines, inside the nacelles with the ducting etc, they really sound like the early turbines, lots of 'howl'.

Hi Peter, its a couple of small birds, they're actually much, much closer than the model, but they appear from nowhere hidden by the grey cloud in the background. When we first saw them on the vid it was a bit weird since none of us saw them in real life! It must have been something to do with the camera catching everything in shot, whereas we were all focussing further away perhaps.
