Not sure will have to measure it. It might well have started as a little nine chassis but I think its had a hard life a lot of the metal work/suspension etc was added by Ashley and will be removed by me Very Happy . Is wheel base wheel to wheel front to back or complete chassis length?.
The idea is to remove surplus metal replace shocks with some kind of lever dampers, fill the multiple holes in the chassis with weld. Refurbish the brakes, no idea what they are except huge will post some pics on the mechanical board for ID. Service rearaxle again looks to be anything but a Standard I am looking for tell tale id on it. Replace the wheels with 16 inch wires aLL round(I would like 18/19 but a little pricey for me). Install engine .build a body wire and drive easy Exclamation

Hi Beeza Smile

Welcome. One thing for sure, you will get a wealth of opinion and advice on this forum. Could you let us know your location ?

Opinion can come thick and fast and here is mine.

There is something about the mods to the chassis that just don't rest easy with me. Is that an angle iron construction at the back, and what is it supposed to do ? Back in the 50's to 70's I guess there were quite a few of us who turned amateur car builders and did some weird things, like lowering the front of Ford 100E's by cutting through the top mount of the Macpherson struts and fabricating something above. A mod that also meant creating either two simple holes or bulges in the bonnet.

But it was a different age, average car speeds were lower and well, it was just different back then, but many of us were much younger.

To be honest, the mods to the suspension, that weird conversion on the rear wheels, when the fronts seem to be proper "knock off", it all looks like a hell of job to put right.

Everyone knows that as soon as one picks up a spanner the bills start racking up, and when it is completed, there is still the road or track legals and safety things to get past.

OK, shoot me down for being a pesimist on this, and believe me I am not that way by nature, but maybe there is a forum member/s closer to you that may want to share an opinion for the price of a pint.

Whatever route you go, I wish you good fortune.

Regards

Peter

I think the rear wheels are still knock off just a strange steel wheel was converted I will check, easy enough with a large hammer Very Happy
The angle iron was put on in the 60's to support a fibreglass Ashley body shell some will be cut out some may be cleaned up painted etc and used to support the floor I will put in.
When they put in the 14 inch front wheels I assume to quicken up the steering they put large alloy blocks to raise the front end up. There was also a steering damper clamped on, all this will go and larger wheels fitted.Things like the front and rear axle, brakes etc scream different and will stay.
On the note it could still be a Standard chassis I noted the engine mounts look to have been bolted in by an amateur and not factory installed Question Question

Ashley wouldn't have modified the chassis, they supplied the GRP body off the shelf to most likely a home-builder, who modified the chassis himself to suit the body he'd just bought. The car was built up by an enthusiast in his shed quite likely, maybe with a view to doing club sprint meetings etc.

I had an Ashley 1172 some years ago, plus a few other Ford-based specials over the years in varying states of decrepitude Smile

Could explain some of the crappy brackets I am removing. The body shell with this was well past its best but I done a deal to have the car collected and he had the shell for one of his projects suited me Very Happy
It was reported to me that this car had raced at Crystal palace but when some little gits smashed the windows the race stickers were destroyed Sad

When I ran a Standard 12 coupe in the 1960s it had an aluminium cylinder head.
I looked at the pictures and immediately thought special.

The manifold and exhaust pipes are later improvements made to tune the car.

I have a dim recollection the Standard 9 chassis was the original basis for the Tr2 sports cars.

Keep us updated it looks fun.

Kels.

Hi Andy,

The Standard 8 had no water pump and the fan was mounted on the dynamo. Sorry, I don't have any parts list for the 8.

I am going have to pop off the head and measure the bores to be sure of at least the cc. The 8 has a 3 speed box and mine is a four speed or are they interchangeable?. The standard website doesn't really list that model in any real detail. I cannot understand why nobody can id the engine from its number,BC124E btw,oh well
