I saw one at an autojumble years ago; the arm and styus were under the record; an attempt I presume to minimise jumping...I very much doubt it worked!

Oh I think so. The car in A Series of Unfortunate Events had one. That was a 1960 Crown Imperial which I expect was rather softly sprung and not given to jolting.

I think it would not be a success in an Austin 7. I'd still like one, I'm a bit keen on record players. |

Record players first appeared in the early mid fifties, at first they were unique to Chrysler products. Most American makes offered them later. The very first ones would only play 16 r.p.m. records. Has any one ever seen a 16r.p.m. record? I haven't. I have seen several record players at American car events, apparently they work quite well although the heavy stylus pressure tends to wear out the records rather quickly. |

I had a gadget called a Discartron in the mid 60's, it played 1 45rpm vynal at a time, was battery / mains powered, I used to take it everywhere, also it fitted in the front parcel tray of the old Mk1 CONSUL, had the odd needle jump on bumpy roads, thought it was state of art technology at the time.. BRING BACK THE 60'S, them was the days.... |
