I am currently in the process of renovating the windscreen on my Commer lorry. It is a split screen and is opening.

I have repaired the frame and cleaned the glass and then purchased the inner and outer rubbers. The glass sits in the inner 'U' shaped rubber which then sits in the frame, the outer rubber is the section that seals to the outer face of the cab.

The problem I am having is the inner 'U' rubber just will not stay in position on the glass long enough for me to slot it into the frame.

I am considering gluing it in position? Any ideas?

If there's a chance you'll need to put sealant around it in order to keep things dry, would that work for holding it place while you fit it? Or would something like Vaseline hold it well enough?

I imagine you just need a helper, a second pair of hands?

Have you tried putting the rubber gasket in the frame first, & then persuade the glass into it?
String?
Soap?
Just an idea.................!

The rubber should be a tight fit on the glass so needs to be fitted before assembling into the frame. We have some black mastic sealant at work so I might try a little of that to hold the rubber in place.

upon inspection I have also found the rubber isn't a very good fit. I was told it was for 5mm glass but upon measuring it the opening is 3mm at most. Therefore when the glass is inserted it opens the rubber too much and it doesn't grip.
