Afternoon all,

Quick question - just looking at a 5/8" die sat on my desk here.

The threads on one side (the face that has the size markings written upon it) gradually appear to their full depth after 2 or 3 goes around, while on the reverse side the threads run almost flush to the face, with a more pronounced chamfer as the face is reached.

Which side of the die is presented to the bolt thread first? I assume the former, easing it on gently rather than with the full depth of the thread from the start?

thanks, RJ

Ta, thought as much. I had a quick look around online at various vids on the subject, but this little nugget of information wasn't forthcoming.

I have a small Myford and it is invaluable for setting up a die square. with the work in the chuck and the die held square by the tail chuck.

Cheers, Tony. Very Happy

Whatever you plan to cut a thread on, at that size and coarse thread, it will take quite a load to get the die to bite if its starting on a 5/8" dia part. Suggest you machine a taper on the end (on excess material you can remove later) to allow the die an easy start. I had a lot of trouble getting an M10 die to start recently until I had a taper.
