Hi all
hopefully someone here can help me get my Ford ten running correctly!
i can get the engine to tick over but seems to be backfiring through the carb
when i took it down the road under load it seemed very low on power.
on getting home, with engine still running i pulled off plug leads to 1 & 4 with no apparent difference to running.Taking off 2 or 3 alters the running so is it plug related?
have timed engine with pin,set points gap and have got good strong spark(as i have found out quite a few times now!!!!) but engine still not right somehow
have had to retire from garage now as starter pinion spring has now broken! never rains!!
any ideas?
thanks
Bob

Is it running too lean? just a thought, sometimes the pipe that leads to the vacuum wiper can develop a leak, leading to fresh air being drawn in, weakening the mixture and resulting in all manner of running issues.

Just a thought, you haven't previously transposed plug leads 1 and 4 by mistake??

I did that once on a 100E and it took me ages - double check with rotation of distributor etc....

Hope it is that simple !

Sticking and/or burnt valve(s)? a compression test would likely show up problems in this department.

After spending much time trying to make my E83W run sensibly I was beginning to question my sanity, after all as my good friend said, its only a ford ten. I had fitted new rotor arm, new cap, new points and a new condenser, if you have got these items from a well known Ford supplier as I did take them out and throw them away as far as possible. Friday 3rd of june midday I phoned the Distributor Doctor, a very nice man who helped me with all the parts I needed and true to his word they arrived sat morning 4th.
With the new parts fitted it has transformed the van into a completely different vehicle, I can actually use it now , a lot of the new parts on sale today are total rubbish and as you have fitted new you trust them to be ok. I cannot recommend this mans spares enough in my experience, you can find him online. Hope this may help Ken

Hi Ken
Was your engine lacking power/not advancing or retarding?
Will have to wait until I have repaired starter motor before I have another try at getting it to run
I know what you mean about sanity,as like your friend said, it's a simple engine, but it's infuriating to me that after having engine fully refurbished it won't run well!!!

Hello, the problems I had were varied to say the least. The strange thing was the van always started, get down the road perhaps a mile perhaps six miles and then it would gradually lose power and eventually stop. I have changed coils ,condensers, caps, plugs, points, cleaned the carb, you name it all at the roadside. One time my friend stopped and we thought it might be the petrol had gone off , he had a can in his van so we tipped a gallon in and filled the float chamber and it started straight away and I drove home with no problems. So now thinking its the modern fuel, drain tank fill with new fuel and the van stopped in the yard and would not run again, leave an hour and it runs ok. I then bought another lot of parts and still suffered the same results , as I said when you buy new parts you think you have eliminated that side of things. Another problem was the coil getting very hot, too hot to hold, since fitting the latest parts this no longer happens.
Just had one thought have you painted the cylinder head and is the distributor earthed ok ? As we have said there is not much to go wrong really as you cant get a much simpler engine, that's providing valve and ignition timing are right. If its not raining tomorrow I will have a longer test run but I am sure its sorted now. Ken

Just thought of a couple of things, have you got proper wire plug leads and are you running six or twelve volts ?
Where are you located ? Ken
