If any of you are off to Rhineland over the festive period I can highly recommend the Technical Museum at Speyer.
http://speyer.technik-museum.de

There is an extraordinary wealth of exhibits from Steam Trains, American fire tenders (biggest collection outside the USA I was told), a clutch of Rolls Royce's, large collection of amazing Horch cars and Mercedes, Porch's etc, along with a whole lot more.
In an outside building there is also a marine area which houses an early complete German U boat and above the whole complex, suspended in mid air, banked at an angle, an ex Lufthansa Jumbo jet, half of its interior stripped out to reveal the construction. It's a long climb up a spiral staircase but very interesting.
There is much more, even a space shuttle.
I spent about 6 hours there and it was a very rushed visit, so much to see that us in Britain would probably never come across.
This was a stopover on a Rhineland Cruise, not well promoted but I was very impressed. There have been many new developments in recent times too so if the wife wants to do the Christmas markets you can while away the hours in here.
I wonder if anyone else has found some similar interesting places?
There was one I was taken to in Sweden cold north a few years back, part of a stately home, also a carriage museum and, of all things, juke boxes and forms of automata music machines. In the depth of Swedish winter this was a very unexpected find and combined with a small group intimate dinner in the stately house with the owner, a very pleasurable experience. I'll try and find the link and post here.
Look forward to other suggestions.
Peter

Petelang, that certainly looks like a definite Museum to visit in Germany.

My wife and I spent a bit of time in Bavaria last year and I completely agree with petelang on the quality of German museums.

While there I visited the BMW museum which is space age and also the Deutsches Museum, both of which are in Munich, in southern Germany.

The BMW Museum is self explanatory, but the Deutsches Museum, located on it's own island in the Isar River, is the world's biggest science and technology museum and however long you spend there, it's not long enough!

Must agree re Speyer & Sinsheim. Spent four days there three years ago, and would go back again and again. There is a basic campsite alongside the hotel at one of them, but brain fade prevents me from remembering which!
Both herself and I loved them, particularly the Concorde on a stick!
I bought the book for my son; cleverly, one way up it covers Speyer, turn it over and it covers Sinsheim.
Don't miss any chance to visit them. The video of bringing Concorde up the river is worth it by itself.

I visited on the same trip as Emmerson mentions, but the guy trying to land his 747 on my Safari caravan was a nuisance!!

Hello, Brian! Good to see you still about.
I don't reckon that safari roof would have very watertight after that!
Oh, but I forgot, it wasn't watertight before was it! Laughing

During a recent short break to Malta I discovered the Malta Classic Car museum in Quera, St Pauls Bay.
http://www.classiccarsmalta.com

A great little museum and run by a very approachable and interesting chap by name of Carol Galea. It houses an eclectic mixture of British, American and European cars, some completely restored (and usable: they all get an occasional trip out, I'm told) and a lot more in the queue waiting work. It's a never ending task as we all know...

The gallery on the website doesn't do it full justice as there are some stunning vehicles there which do not appear in the pictures. One in particular is the 1929 Pontiac. I will try and post a picture or two of it.
Also a complete showroom condition early Corvette and similar Thunderbird in gleaming red!
Other interesting exhibits, an XJS estate (Eventer?) very very nice Alfa and a MK10 Jag. Lots to see. Interesting for the wife or girlfriend too as there are exhibits of the fashions of the day that correspond as well as other memorabilia.
The owner is often around and loves to chat and share his passion, a rare thing in museums.

[quote="petelang"]During a recent short break to Malta I discovered the Malta Classic Car museum in Quera, St Pauls Bay.

I can endorse everything already said about this museum. I visit it every time I am in Malta. In addition to the car collection there is a display of '60s fashion and furniture.
Malta is a great place for old car lovers. There is a very active group of enthusiasts who have their cars out most weekends. The climate is far kinder and many models that have long departed our roads are still running about as daily drivers.

On the subject of museums can I suggest we share our collective knowledge of interesting places to visit?
I am sure there must be many places that are well worth a visit that we simply don't know about.
I will take the liberty of suggesting three I have stumbled upon over the years.

Anson Engine Museum, Poynton Cheshire SK12 1TD

Bubble Car Museum, Clover Farm, Boston PE22 7AW

Chain Bridge Honey Farm, Horncliffe TD15 2XT

If in the locality these places are well worth a detour and, as they are running on a shoestring, I am sure they can use all the visitors they can get.

This place is well worth a visit:

Just off the A6 nr Loughborough. We found it completely by chance as we were passing close by, the collection of pre-war cars and memorabilia is excellent.

Here's one that I really enjoyed. It was one of the hidden gems of our Scottish trip.

Although local to me I did visit it on a Scottish Tour too.
