The early cars were "horseless carriages" which were naturally bodied by "coach builders" who already had the necessary skills. It is not surprising then, that some coach building terms have survived and can still be found in "cars" of today. The body "rocker" is one such; being the main floor timber planking of an Ash frame. (although it does not appear in this list of coach building terms - which is by no means definitive.
