Evening all,
I dug out my A40 Mk1 from its long-term resting place over the weekend, and began to think about how it might be resurrected.
I've collected quite a few new parts over the years, an example being a pair of NOS (new old stock) rear lamp assemblies, in their original boxes.
The question is - should I stick with the originals, the chrome (mazak) of which will clean up respectably but isn't perfect, or instead fit the new BMC parts in their place?? The car by this stage would have been repainted.
Thoughts?

I like to keep as origional as poss so I'd stick with the originals if they are serviceable.
If you are after perfection then change but if it's a decent driver you are after then keep as much as is possible.
Is it game on for a refurb?

I'd like to start putting plans into motion, but no set plans as yet. It's been stored under a lean-to type thing for years, I think it was last on the road in 1996 and even then it was ripe for resto. A few jobs were undertaken years ago then other things got in the way, and progress stalled. In December it'll be 30 years since I passed my test in it
Now it's sat cosily in the main garage, I think I'll get the various boxes of bits I've accumulated together, and remind myself exactly what I have (and don't have!!).
I'll open up a thread about it soon.

NOS is now becoming pure unobtanium, so if you have serviceable parts I'd use them. When I was rammed in the rear last year I was lucky that some parts weren't destroyed since they haven't been made in fifty years, but I do have spares in the garage just in case. I hope I never have to use them, and then my kids can throw them away when I am gone! |

Remember the years before internet?
As spares were pretty hard to come by, I bought many new spares at Beaulieu and other auto jumbles whenever I had the chance because you never knew if you could find them again.
Now, 20 / 30 years later I still have most of these spares as the internet has provided for another easy way to get them. Suppose them in the future when I have lots of spare time (dream on ) I can always sell them via that same internet. _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |

I always try to use the originals where possible. Over the years I have collected many NOS parts for my Hillmans at various autojumbles so there are replacement parts available if required.
I often like the look of parts that are original and cleaned up rather than brand spanking new and shiny. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Hey Rootes75 - I see you own a 1978 Karrier Bantam. That must be one of the very last to carry the name Karrier. Any chance of a picture?
What year was the name Commer last used? Also 1978 or were they allowed to live a little bit longer (after the 1978 Peugeot takeover)?

Sometimes finding a N.O.S. part can be misleading. I have re - discovered things in my shed that look new; are in their original box but when examined more closely are found to be faulty. This is why they have not been used!... I had just forgotten the circumstances that led to them being left on the shelf.
I have also bought stuff advertised as "n.o.s." and found that they are not as described. I once bought a rare "never lost" petrol cap from the States to go on my Dodge. (it has a 'dog bone' handle that matched the radiator cap)
Unfortunately, I found that the cap was well worn but somehow was still in it's original 1920's box! |
