When I was a little chap growing up I was taken to Greenwich to see the original line. I remember my little Brother and I walking along the {brass?) strip in the pavement.

Why can't people just leave well alone?

Hi Ray
Greenwich is still THE PRIME.

OS just utilised 2Deg W as the N/S base line for the UK National Grid.

Locality Modern longitude Meridian name
Greenwich 0° 00' 05.3101″ W Greenwich meridian
Greenwich 0° 00' 05.33″ W United Kingdom Ordnance Survey Zero Meridian
Greenwich 0° 00' 00.00″ IERS Reference Meridian
Paris 2° 20' 14.025″ E Paris meridian

Today, tourists visiting its meridian line must walk east approximately 335 feet before their satellite-navigation receivers indicate zero longitude.

Because newer technologies – primarily the superb accuracy of GPS, which uses satellites to precisely measure grid coordinates at any point on the Earth’s surface – replaced the traditional telescopic observations used to measure the Earth’s rotation.

Good old sign for Worcester A44 spotted in Leominster recently, complete with glass jewels in the lettering.

There used to be quite a few of those old signs around Leominster a few years ago; I wonder if the vandals have had the rest?

Not exactly road signs but I used to collect (rail)road signs and our last house had three floors so I placed the ¾ (mile to catch points) between the first and second floors, the ½ on the first landing and the ¼ half way between ground and first floors.

This is an image from a box of slides I bought last year. I think it's a late 60s image, but I've put the box away now and can't look.

Looking at a road atlas suggests that sign must have been in Cardigan, I wonder if it's still there?

There's quite a collection of photos featuring older road signs on this flickr account, many have since been taken down apparently
