I'm in the USA so this may not be much help,
but have you tried companies that specialise in accessories for pick-up trucks?
Keywords might be bed-rail or tail-gate protectors.
Here's just one example:

Thank you very much for your suggestions and the reference.

I have been examining sites in the USA and what is on offer is very interesting.

I will contact this site but I suspect shipping costs may be high - I'll find out though.

Thank you,

Ellis

I have just had an online conversation with the firm above and unfortunately they have nothing suitable and do not ship to the United Kingdom.

Worth a try though wasn't it?

Any other suggestions OCC forum members?

Found these, although the price is excessive!

Thank you Steve,

£500! Ouch!

Oddly enough, I have found a site in the USA who make cappings to order but they will decide if the operation is feasible as they have nothing specific for Land Rover 110 and if they do I have to arrange my own courier - they don't ship outside of the USA :

Autoanything.com

On a chat line yesterday evening, the staff member didn't even know what a Land Rover Defender was so the firm wants photos and measurements.

Final post on this thread.

I have tried three auto accessory sites in the USA this morning and they all refuse to help or offer a capping that I could cut or adapt.
Something to do with Patent Laws was the inference, so, I'll have to find an "U" shaped channel similar to the "in transit" protector.

I don't give up easily so onwards................

With all respect Ellis but I think a plastic finisher looks very wrong and cheap. Rubber or metal would be OK in my book.
Just my opinion of course. Very Happy

That's what makes OCC such an interesting place.

Now! I do have a solution and I just remembered about this afternoon.
About six years ago I ordered 5 square metres of ribbed rubber from a well known internet auction site. I paid, I think, £13 or so for it.

A few days later the local City Link courier struggled up to my house with a big heavy roll of something.
Guess what, the firm, and I'll be deliberately vague here, had sent me not 5 square metres but a 25 metre role of this ribbed rubber which is 123cm wide!

I think it will cover the side rails perfectly! By the way that roll weighs nearly 25 kilos.

What do you all think?

And yes, once again Imgur have pasted this huge image and I tried to resize it before posting.

Out of curiosity I copied the original image. It measures 45" x 34" @72PPI

I resized to 6" wide kept to 72PPI

The rubber would look better than the "In Transit cappings"

But how will it be attached? Land Rover would probably rivet it on!

Sikkaflex I suppose with perhaps four shiny stainless steel bolts each side to show off my ingenuity, Laughing

After glueing the rubber to the car, cut off the SS bolts leaving just the bolt heads and glue these too to the rubber. Just a thought Very Happy

My opinion: If you bolt down the rubber it will tend to dimple around the bolt.

Perhaps a different approach, paint the existing metal capping Matt or Silk finish Black. Black hides a multitude of sins, it would edge the box and any damage could be easily repaired with another coat of paint.

Glue on rubber ? then cut, damage or scuff the rubber, what will it look like, what if the rubber starts to "bleach out" or crack in the sun. ?

As different materials expand and contract at different rates, what if the rubber decides it wants to expand more than the metal below, will the glue persuade it not to ?

I don,t know Peter but I do remember that this particular type of rubber is supposed to be UV resistant.

Because so many of you contributed to this post I thought you would all like to know that I have obtained some of this channelling.

The credit and my many thanks go to Kevin2306 who with his charming wife, June, visited last Saturday and presented me with several sections of what is up and over garage door transit protectors which are manufactured in Germany.

I had used the ribbed runner matting on the top rails of my Defender 110 but as an added bonus the channelling fits so tightly over the rubber that there is no need for adhesives or fixings.

I did mention that I was going to ask a local German lady to try and find some reference to this material on German Google. We may complain about Google here but the lady had trouble navigating the German version which is heavily protects on all the enquiries she attempted.

Problem solved and once again my many thanks to Kevin.
