The Jaguar film, if poignant, was fascinating in other respects:

a) in how decrepit was the breakdown truck? No headlights etc

b) how the scrapyard personnel were dressed. The chap with the oxy acec was wearing a suit and tie. Nobody had gloves or other safety equipment. Maybe a comment on the clothing of the time, with little in the way of specialised clobber.

c) all the stuff in the yard, was pretty much scrap. Not the virtually complete cars you see in other films (or I can remember from breakers in the '60s/'70s)

d) presume setting fire to the vehicle got rid of anything that wasn't scrap metal.

d) was there some message in the Chaplinesque driver eventually buying the modern equivalent of his old car.

e) recognised the actor doing the driving. Didn't he appear in some soap opera?

Our 1937 Hillman 80 has had a few film roles, wartime stuff etc and I was even shown some clips of her in a Chronicles of Narnia film recently.

It is so dated looking at it now, but my car was used by the Beeb in 1995 for "the Car's the Star" I arrived at 1300, was offered a curled sandwich, and waited and waited. Filming eventually started and finished at 0530 and then I drove home. Only to have an electrical problem on the way. if you feel like cringing, have a look here.

We have just watched 'Darkest Hour' starring Gary Oldman as Churchill. A nice film and plenty of good acting.

Set in 1940 I was a little surprised to see a Riley RME driving around and in another shot a close up was shown of a 49-53 Ford Anglia!
