That's smarter than mine, looks cleaner on the body anyway.just had a run along the drive in mine so grinning like a Cheshire cat Very Happy

.Tyres to sort next.Do you go far in yours or just local runs?

Mainly plan to stay local, last car meet we did was about 10 miles away, we are taking her out this coming Sunday about 20 miles from home.
She pulls well but is thirsty with the 3 litre engine.

What mpg do you get roughly,it says early 20's in book but doubt that,suppose mine will do a few more as its smaller!

Not sure exactly what we get, I think its just under 20 mpg. You're Hawk has the 6 cylinder engine?
I think by the looks of it your car will come up nice with a wash and polish.

Yes,6 cyl,3 l.think there's a fair few more battle scars than yours but to be honest I love things to be original so I will try and keep it that way.

Its been discussed on the forum a lot in the past, to restore or not to restore. There are merits to both and its up to the individual owner to make that decision.

My opinion, of one who has restored and also left original, is that if the vehicle is unsafe, major corrosion etc I would restore. If the vehicle is sound in chassis and body and simply shabby with age I would leave as is (still work on brakes / lights etc though). The amount of interest an original vehicle gets on a rally field is brilliant.

Enjoy the car, enjoy driving it and enjoy the reaction you get.

Hi Bassett

Great car. My grandfather had a post war Humber Hawk Mark 1. Unfortunately it was sold before I was old enough to get my hands on it. Re oil for your Hillman. You can do far worse than go with Penrite Oils from Australia. They have been run by the same family since 1926 and now have distributors in the UK. They make a range of oils for the vintage/classic/sports car market.

I have used their oils for the past 35 years, both in Australia and in Scotland and have never had a complaint.

Good luck with getting to know the Hillman.

Thanks for the advice it's greatly received,I will look into the oil firm and as far as enjoying the car i love it,just looking at it brings a smile to my face and even her indoors loves it.The car is good as new chassis wise so everything mechanical will be gone through but appearance wise it will be left alone,having been less than half a mile away from where I live in the same garage from new i find amazing .The Bassett family did so much for Ashover and it's people that I feel honoured to be able to preserve the car and it's story for future generations.After owning thirty odd tractors and still owning ten plus two triumph tiger cubs i can safely say I'm bitten by the car bug.Once again thanks for the advice and input

Has your Hillman got an inline filter with replaceable elements? if not then a modern oil will do more damage the an "old fashioned" oil, as the dirt and carbon deposits will be held in suspension within the oil and passed back into the bearings a other working parts. For engine's with only a rudimentary oil strainer instead of a filter oils with an API /SE or less should only be used.

Yes,it's just a washable filter ,think I will go with a good 30w and keep an eye on pressure.
