It's not just me then... One of my colleagues reckoned I'd have a smartphone within a year or two, and I said that she would be more likely to find me living in a cabin in the woods somewhere, moaning about the price of paraffin. The idea looks more and more attractive... Laughing

I must confess I'd miss my smartphone:

• Its got my music on it
• Its not bad at taking photo's & video's
• I use it for contactless payments, in many places not limited to £30 as cards are and more secure than using a credit or debit card.
• I travel a lot for work, its really handy to book flight & trains, check in online
• Boarding pass/ tickets on my phone .
• The Uber app is great for booking and paying for cabs all over the globe and takes away the hassle of language misunderstandings.
• The maps and navigation are invaluable, last week in Kerpen Germany, I was meeting a colleague, they simply sent me a "pin" of where they were and my phone navigated me to the destination.
• CityMapper works out the optimum Walk/Bus/Tube/Tram to get you round cities
• At work we tend to work on multiple projects with colleague's in multiple locations, we set up a WhatsApp group per project and have a quick and instant way sharing info
• I can download or stream films to watch when travelling
• I can lock or unlock my car from anywhere in the world
• It’s a compass
• It’s a spirit level
• I can send or receive money to friends
• Book a doctors appointment
• Park my car or move it in or out of tight parking spaces without being in the car
• Find places to eat, check reviews on TripAdvisor, scan the menu and book
• Stack of other Apps some useful some entertaining!

One problem is that you become too reliant on the device' loose it and your buggered!
I'd miss my smartphone as many of the tasks listed above would take much longer to do any other way.

Dave

You've just reminded me of an occasion last year when a spirit level function on a mate's smartphone got me out of a corner when I'd forgotten to put one in the car. I was putting up a post to hang a gate on, and would have had to abandon the job without it.

I can't see me using one for parking a car - I'd need a properly modern car for that anyway! - or gaming and so on, but think I may have to take the plunge when I get paid next...

Smart phones are addictive! So proceed with caution!!

I guarantee if you get an IPhone, within a month you will have:

Stopped using cards for payment.
Loaded all your music on to the phone.
Have googled a few restaurant menus before deciding where to eat!

Go for it !

Having read through Dave's list, I am now convinced more than ever that I don't need a smart phone - I have no need for any of those functions!

When you are totally lost then the blue blob on Google maps is much better than a paper map and compass.

After a lifetime of rallying, orienteering and the like, I can manage fine with just a paper map; I've never yet had recourse to use a compass!

Doing a rally this weekend where you have to hand in your phones before starting. Now THAT should sort the men from the boys!

I suppose we will all get to the time in life when the Luddite term will be applied!

So flipping this thread, a question..... in the past, when and why did you think someone was a Luddite?
