CHAMPIONSHIP WINNING COBRA TO WELCOME ENTHUSIASTS TO REIS RACE RETRO.

Motorsport enthusiasts will be welcomed to the 2020 Reis Race Retro by Kevin ‘KeKi’ Kivlochan’s stunning racing Cobra. Not only does this competition car boast a fascinating place in the history of the model but it has notched up amazing success in the 2019 HSCC Historic Road Sports Championship.

Known in Cobra circles as ‘The FoMoCo Blue Demo’, chassis number CSX 2360 was delivered to Lew Spencer’s Hi-Performance Motors in Los Angeles on 29 January 1965. Intended as a demonstrator, potential customers would be treated to some very exciting test drives courtesy of Peter Brock, designer of the Daytona Cobra and split-screen Chevrolet Corvette. Having spent around ten years in America, the car came to the UK where it has remained ever since.

Its current owner began racing in 1992 with a 1966 Shelby GT350 Mustang and has since owned and campaigned a number of well-known Cobras, including COB 6008 driven by Jack Sears. Kevin acquired CSX 2360 in June 2018, describing it as a beautiful road car but one that was in no way ready for racing. In fact, the previous owner covered just 300 miles in eighteen years with the car.

Kevin’s plan was for competition, though, and the Cobra was despatched to RW Racing Services in Northamptonshire for preparation. The results speak for themselves. He raced his Morgan Plus 8 in the first round of the 2019 Championship at Donington Park, but with the Cobra ready for Round 2 at Snetterton, it was the beginning of a dominant season. That first double-header race resulted in pole position, two wins and two fastest laps.

It set the tone for an amazing season. Of the fourteen races contested - there were rounds at a number of UK circuits as well as Spa - Kevin would win all of them, along the way claiming twelve pole positions and 14 fastest laps. Just for good measure, he would set a new lap record at the Silverstone Finals held in October.

“The car was supremely reliable throughout the season, which is a real testament to the careful preparation” says Kevin. “I found it much more physical to drive than the Morgan, and there was certainly extra pressure towards the end of the season as people expected me to win, but I never imagined the Cobra would be this successful straight out of the box.”

Thanks to Carroll Shelby, the Cobra is already steeped in automotive folklore, but this particular example is truly special. And having proved such a successful winner on track, it is guaranteed plenty of interest at this year’s Reis Race Retro.

RALLY LEGEND DIDIER AURIOL AND EUROPEAN RALLY CHAMPION CHRIS INGRAM JOIN REIS RACE RETRO.

French Rally driver Didier Auriol, who won the World Rally Championship (WRC) in 1994, will make his debut at this year’s Reis Race Retro. He will be joined by the current European Rally Champion Chris Ingram.

Born in Montpellier and initially an ambulance driver, Auriol started rallying in an old Simca 1000. After winning his first French Rallye Championship in 1986 behind the wheel of a Metro 6R4, he repeated his success in 1987 and ’88 but this time in a works Ford Sierra RS Cosworth.

Auriol made his name in the WRC throughout the 1990s. He was the first Frenchman to win the Championship. He also drove for manufacturers including Lancia, Toyota, and Peugeot amongst others during his career.

As well as driving in a replica of the Cosworth on the Reis Live Rally Stage on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd February, Auriol will be interviewed and taking fans’ questions on the interview stage. He will also be signing autographs and posing for selfies with fans.

Joining Auriol is British rally driver Chris Ingram, who won the European Rally Championship in 2019 with co-driver Ross Whittock, becoming the first British winners in 52 years and the youngest ever Champions.

Ingram, a long-time supporter of Race Retro since he started rallying, has a raft of trophies to his name including the 2012 Motor Sports Association Young Driver of the Year Award, and the European Rally Championship Colin McRae Flat Out Award won on the Circuit of Ireland Rally 2014, Rallye Açores 2015, and Rally Liepaja in 2017. He also won the Richard Burns Trophy on Wales Rally GB in 2017 for winning the Two-Wheel drive class.

In 2014, Ingram became the youngest manufacturer-backed rally driver since Richard Burns in the European Rally Championship driving a Peugeot 208 R2.

After two seasons with Peugeot, he signed with German factory team Opel Motorsport, something he credits to the late great Russell Brookes.

“I first met Russell at Race Retro in 2016, where he took me for a ride in his iconic Opel Manta 400 ahead of my debut season with the Opel Motorsport team driving an Opel Adam R2,” explains Chris.

He added: “Shortly after the event, Russell helped me secure sponsorship from his loyal former sponsors Andrews Heat For Hire, which effectively saved my career and enabled me to compete in the FIA European Junior Rally Championship with Opel Motorsport, which I went on to win in 2017.

“Russell predicted I would bring the European Rally Championship title back to Britain, so just a few years later we did it!”

Ingram will also be in action on the Live Rally Stage in a car supplied by BGMSport throughout the weekend as well as being interviewed in the Halls and meeting fans.

REIS RACE RETRO PAYS TRIBUTE TO NORMAN DEWIS OBE WITH JAGUAR ENTHUSIASTS CLUB DISPLAY.

The 18th edition of Reis Race Retro, held at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry from 21-23 February, will pay tribute to legendary Jaguar test development driver, Norman Dewis OBE.

The show’s ‘Hall of Fame’ will feature a special three-car display, with cars supplied by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust. Norman Dewis was a motorsport legend and a long-time friend of the show, as well as being responsible for the development of some of Jaguar’s most iconic models.

Norman Dewis was chief test driver and development engineer for Jaguar between 1952 and 1985. A 33-year career with Jaguar that saw him break the land speed record for production cars in a Jaguar XK120 on the Jabbeke Highway in Belgium and, through his long and often dangerous hours of test driving, significantly contribute to the Le Mans wins for Jaguar in the 1950s with the C and D – Types.

Norman also raced alongside the greats which included Moss, Hawthorn and Fangio behind the wheel of a works Jaguar D Type. In 2014, the adoration of Norman’s fans was recognised on a national scale, when he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

The Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club, with the support of the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust, have assembled a line-up of three cars that represent key moments in Norman’s career.

The display’s earliest car is a Jaguar C Type. Dewis began developing the disc brake concept on the C Type. The technology was fitted to Stirling Moss' Jaguar C-type in the 1952 Mille Miglia, and Dewis accompanied him as a passenger.

Next, is the oldest surviving convertible E -Type 77RW, that Dewis famously drove through the night, at short notice, from Coventry to the Geneva Motor Show ready for the 10am press launch for the car.

It was one of his most awe-inspiring achievements and speaking of the adventure Norman recalled: “I arrived in Geneva just in time for a 10am press conference the following morning, and Sir William Lyons looked at his watch and simply said, ‘I knew you’d make it, Dewis.”

The display is made complete with the unique, one off, XJ13 racing prototype that Norman Dewis developed for racing at Le Mans before it was shelved. Years later, he drove it again at a press launch at MIRA and was lucky to escape a horrendous crash in it. All three cars represent key moments in Norman Dewis’ life.

James Blackwell, General Manager of the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club said, “Norman was one of the most highly respected drivers and engineers that has ever lived, he had a special talent for assessing the handling of car and how it might be improved. He came from the era that Race Retro celebrates, when racing and test drivers alike were heroes. It’s an honour for us at the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club to be able to work with the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust to celebrate the life of the friend, hero and inspiration to Jaguar fans everywhere, Norman Dewis OBE.”

Elsewhere within Reis Race Retro, the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club’s Race Championship organisers will also be on hand to greet potential new competitors interested in all aspects of Jaguar motorsport on Stand 2-207.

REIS RACE RETRO REVEALS FORMULA ONE CARS AND STARS TO CELEBRATE ‘THE GREATEST GRID’.

Reis Race Retro has revealed the Formula One cars and the stars associated with F1 that will be a part of ‘The Greatest Grid’ celebrations at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, from 21-23 February.

The display will feature no less than seven F1 cars and will be supported by appearances by F1 driver Martin Donnelly, Technical Director and Chief Designer Tony Southgate who worked with BRM, Shadow and Arrows, ex- BAR Team Principal David Richards and McLaren's former number-one mechanic, Marc 'Elvis' Priestley.

Marking 70 years of the Formula One World Championship, the oldest cars on display are the 1960 BRM P48 and the 1962 Lotus 24, both kindly on loan from Hall and Hall.

The BRM P48#2 made its debut in April 1960 at the International ‘100’ Aintree driven by Graham Hill, but its best result was in May 1960 at the International Trophy Silverstone taking third place on the podium. It competed in the Monaco, Belgium, Reims-Gueux Grand Prixes with Dan Gurney at the wheel.

Making its debut in the May of 1962 in the Silverstone B.R.D.C International Trophy, the Lotus 24#947 was driven by Jack Brabham, who campaigned the car in nine Grand Prixes. He eventually took the top spot on the podium with a win at the Danish Grand Prix.

The 1973 Shadow DN1 was the first car for Don Nichol’s new F1 team, which had previously participated in the CanAm Sportscar Series. DN1 was designed by Southgate and in its first year included Jackie Oliver and George Follmer, who both secured third places over the course of the year. Graham Hill also purchased a DN1 for his newly established privateer team, Embassy Hill.

The Williams FW07B, from Williams Heritage Collection, is the car that secured Williams its first Drivers and Constructors World Championship title in 1980 with Alan Jones at the wheel. Designed the year before by Sir Patrick Head, Frank Dernie, and Neil Oatley, it was small, simple and extremely light as one of the first ‘ground effects’ cars, powered by a Ford Cosworth DFV.

Still racing today, the Jordan 194/05 was driven by Rubens Barrichello in the 1994 F1 season. With its livery changed to bright yellow, owner Tony Worswick and the Workswick Engineering Racing team used the car to compete in the European Boss Formula Champion, winning the title in 1999 and 2001.

No celebration of F1 would be complete without a car from one of the world’s most successful manufacturers that was driven by one of the world’s most successful drivers. On loan from Haynes International Motor Museum, the Ferrari F310 was driven in the 1996/97 seasons by Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine. The car won a total of eight Grands Prixes, secured 22 podiums, seven pole positions and 172 points.

At the start of the 2002 season, Prodrive took over the management of BAR with Chairman David Richards becoming Team Principle. The team experienced modest results throughout its first two seasons before finishing second in the Constructors' Championship in 2004. The car that will feature in The Greatest Grid was driven by Jenson Button, who finished third in the Drivers Championship. Button went on to win the 2009 World Championship for Brawn GP.

Irish racing driver Martin Donnelly is probably best known for the horrific crash that ended his F1 career. Starting as a test driver for Lotus, Donnelly got his break with Arrows in his first F1 season in 1989, standing in for injured driver Derek Warwick. In 1990, he moved to Lotus with Warwick as his team mate but had a frustrating season due to engine issues.

During the Spanish Grand Prix practice session at the Jerez circuit, Donnelly suffered a serious crash and sustained multiple injuries including severe leg fractures, brain and lung contusions. The car disintegrated as Donnelly was thrown onto the track. However, the one thing that survived was the steering wheel which can be seen on the Live Stage at Reis Race Retro.

I've got a discount code if anyone is interested. <snip>
(I was in two minds whether to post it, or whether to ask people to PM me for it, but it's in a post on Pistonheads so it's not exactly top secret. If you think it should stay hidden Rick feel free to edit this).

I think in the spirit of being fair to the organisers, the code is presumably for exhibitors only, rather than Joe Public, and not for general usage.

Fair enough Rick. I'd presumed it was a code that exhibitors could give to their customers to get discounted tickets, much like our club used to get a discount code to give to friends and family at CPOP and other events.

Weird that it wouldn't go through checkout. I have read varying things - my order insisted on posting tickets, which has now turned into me collecting them on the day, another person posted that theirs had been sent as an email attachment.

I only got the email attachment print it out yourself option, but I guess that's because it's so short notice

REIS RACE RETRO 2020 SECURES A PODIUM FINISH AS ENTHUSIASTS SAY IT WAS THE ‘BEST EVER’.

Reis Race Retro, Europe’s number one historic motorsport show, secured a ‘podium finish’ with enthusiasts who braved the inclement weather over the weekend and hailed the 2020 event ‘the best ever.’

With over 140 rally cars in action, a stellar line-up of celebrity drivers and guests, over 24,200 attendees visited Warwickshire’s Stoneleigh Park for the annual celebration.

Show Director Lee Masters said: “We are thrilled with the feedback we have seen so far on the show and thank all those who continue to support this great event, including our new headline sponsor Reis Motorsport Insurance.”

Making his show debut, French World Rally Champion Didier Auriol was just one of the guests appearing on the Reis Live Stage, hosted by Gemma Scott. European Rally Champion Chris Ingram, F1 driver Martin Donnelly, Le Mans racer Andy Wallace, and former McLaren F1 mechanic Marc ‘Elvis’ Priestley were also interviewed to name a few.

On Saturday and Sunday, visitors enjoyed the high-octane action on the two Live Rally Stages with over 140 Group B and WRC cars in action under the watchful eye of Rallying with Group B.

Auriol kicked off the live action, reunited with the Ford Sierra Cosworth replica of the car he drove in period, while Ingram sat behind the wheel of a ‘Skodaru’, a Peugeot 306, and a Nissan Funny F2 to name a few. The wet weather only added to the fun as the cars slipped and slid around the rally stage, resulting in a fantastic spectacle for onlookers.

Inside the halls, the Reis Pride of the Paddock competition was won by Paul Boscott’s 1967 Lotus Elan Plus 2 with Brian Betteridge’s 1988 Ford RS200 in second place and Jim Angliss’ modified 1967 Ford Anglia 105E in third.

Richard Morley, Broking Director at Reis Motorsport Insurance, commented: “The show celebrates all that is great about the motorsport community and there is truly something for every enthusiast to enjoy. It was our first year as headline sponsor and a fantastic way to kick start the season for us.”

Silverstone Auctions’ two-day sale also secured some good results including an Aston Martin DB5 seeing the hammer down at £708,750, a WRC 2007 Subaru Impreza selling at £189,000, and 1 1992 Lancia Hyena Zagato finding a new home for £168,750.

There were also strong sales from the 250 specialist traders as well as the ever enduring Autojumble as race and rally teams and their drivers grabbed all their gear for the season ahead.
