My recently acquired restoration project has been stored badly in the previous owners garden and consequently lots of the engine casting and ancillaries are heavily corroded. The engine runs perfectly and I don't really wish to strip it down to polish everything (not yet at least) so can anyone recommend a product to remove the corrosion from the aluminium that will not affect other components that might get hit by any overspray.

Hydrochloric acid is the best stuff for removing aluminium oxide, regarding effect on other materials it will react with steel , and is used to also remove ferrous corrosion, but not in the time that will be required to remove the aluminium oxide it will erode brass slowly (its used to polish brass).

Keep it away from enamel paint, should be ok with acrylic paint.

Available from all builders merchants, sold as "Brick Cleaner" it's not intended to clean dirty bricks, but to remove mortar stains. Make sure you get brick cleaner thats acid based, and not some new fangled environmentally friendly rose smelling nonsense!

Brush it on, agitate it where the corrosion is heavy, rinse off with tap water, repeat as required. Eye and skin protection essential.

Thanks, I'll pop down to my local builders merchant tomorrow and see what they have in stock.

Also known as 'Spirits of Salts' and used to be a popular agent to clean metal for soldering.
