I sometimes wonder if I would have liked to have been an 'Edwardian' Country House Chauffeur/ Mechanic charged with looking after a collection of fine vehicles. I would have had my own accommodation above the garage in a purpose built Motor House in the grounds of the Estate. I can imagine worse.

The downside would be an open drive limousine in bitterly cold weather.

Those events were in the future so no worries...

Have you never wondered what life you could have lived in a more innocent age?

Growing up just after the war living in a house with a coal fire in the living room only, an outside toilet, tin bath in the scullery, ice on the inside of the bedroom windows, no thanks not unless I can take my money with me.
The price of my semi would buy a country mansion back then and my meagre pension would make me the richest man in the village.

Although the era wasn't without its issues (for example the Cold War), I think England in the 1950s might have suited me.

The late 50s were good but don't forget we still had food and clothing rationed until 1953 after which thing rapidly got better.

My Great Grandfather was a Carriage Driver to a landed family. I sometimes wonder what he must have thought about this new fangled carriage that went along without horses! Shocked

I guess my late father lived the dream then but after the second war. He was chauffeur for a member of the Coleman family ( of mustard fame). I could probably write a book on the tales he used to tell but one interesting snippet was that the garage, at any one time, had a Bentley and Humber in it and both my father and ‘the old man’ ( as Mr Coleman was known) both preferred the Humber.

On a similar thread; H.M. The Queen has a new Bentley (nice green one) but, apparently, her favourite car was a Vauxhall Cresta. !

But we didn't know anything else, so life was good. I wouldn't trade my 1950s childhood for any other period. We were grateful for the good things we had and the future looked exciting - what more could you want?

Apart from having too much pressure, kids these days don't have half the freedom that we had in the '50s and 60s.

Admittedly, I had a privileged childhood, but no matter, there was a general feeling that you could achieve anything you wanted to if you put your mind to it.

My paternal Grandfather had a few jobs after the war, one was being a chauffeur. My father told me he drove a Humber Pullman.

I like the idea of living in the 30's.

The '30s were fine if you had money. My Dad grew up in the pre War period and, if asked, he would describe in painful detail the privations and poverty of that time. It was what drove him to be an engineer. It was also the catalyst for him being a Communist - but we needn't dwell on that!
