Totally off topic Rick, but a funny story that always comes to mind when I think of the Althorp estate. Back in the 1990s the Northamptonshire County Golf Club was approached by a builder to buy the land, build them a new golf course elsewhere, and each member would have touched a a tidy sum - many thousands. They had an Extraordinary General Meeting and a majority of the members were in favour. Until that was one member stood up and read from the original bill of sale of the land. The family had sold it in 1909 for a token sum of £1, but - and a big but - was the stipulation that if the land was sold other than for other than golfing purposes it was first to be offered back to the family at the original purchase price. The club still exists of course. |
