A very logical reason and simple fix when you think about it.

I understood that the main reason for tape over the gun ports was simply to prevent the oil in the guns from freezing at the very high altitudes that dog fights were generally fought at.

Its weird being the same age as old people.
You are either part of the problem or part of the solution

Hi
They did have a gun heating system (coolant from the engine)

Item number 121, starboard wing, just above the cannon magazine, is shown as a Gun Heating Pipe.

About 20 years ago I restored an A35.
It looked very smart and I was quite proud of it.
One day my 11 year old daughter asked me to collect her and a friend from a party.
"Can you come in Mums car please" she said. Crying or Very sad

About 3 yrs ago I was showing Mk1 Escort at an agricultural show, a lad of about 9 came running towards the vehicle display and skidded to a halt in front of my car, I was by the car next to it. He just stared and the shouted "Modena Green!"
A breathless dad arrived and the lad repeated himself, and asked his dad for a photo. I walked over, opened the car and said to him, "Get in". His dad took lots of pictures and told me his son had a poster of a Mk1 Escort in Modena green on his bedroom wall, it was his dream car.
I was just happy to oblige, I remember my excitement at seeing a racing Anglia fighting it out with the British VitaMin chop roof Mini's when I was his age.
