In these rather desperate times, I got to ruminating about the bikes I've had, and this was my first - a Sun 98cc two-speed. What was your first bike?

A Puch M50 sport, which I paid £8 for in 1983...... It used to seize up every couple of miles, so I would just pull in the clutch and coast for a bit to let it cool down and away you go again for another 2 miles!!

A 1957 Binetta 50cc moped. I didn't need reminding, thank you. I replaced it with a Cyclemaster Piatti 125cc scooter. Piatti is another word for death-trap.

If you don't count the LE Velocette that I never got on the road then it was this one. I got it from a friend of my big sister in exchange for me building a record player for her. It was a Puch Alpine 150.

Lambretta Li 150, bought for £5 off an old lady whose son had gone to Australia. Every year, and whenever she had any painting to do, she painted the excess on the scooter to stop it rusting! He eventually after 10 years he decided he was staying in Oz so she sold it to me. It was seized solid. 2 months later I was riding my first freedom machine, rebuilt and repainted, (after acid bathing the panels to get the paint off). Happy days. _________________ 1974 Mk1 Escort. |

1962. First motorised was a Norman Nippy Moped with embarrassing pedals
Then this and for a short while, very very short, I had a 250 Honda, but it kept falling over on corners. 1963 I moved to 4 wheels and have never gone back.

So now, what was your last? I went through a Tiger Cub to a Francis Barnett 250cc Villiers Twin to a Tiger 100 and a Gold Star DBD34 and back to a Trophy before I stopped, and later came back to a Honda VFR 800 in the 90s. Brilliant bike that, and no oil leaks |

Last motorbike? 1981 250cc CZ. It was my commuter bike but I had to sell it in 1984 due to my chiropractor's warnings about my back. Been on four wheels ever since.
After my first bikes, the Binetta and Piatti, I went through a number of Triumphs, a Vincent Comet, several Jawas (Bikes that I really loved) and a couple of Hondas. Somewhere in that lot was a James 150cc.

Hi
After the Bown Autocycle, I only had 2 bikes, both Ariel Leaders.
I rather fancied a Velocette Vogue though I gather they are somewhat underpowered compared with the Leader.
On the other hand what a shame this didn't come to the market.
