In a recent exchange of messages with Ray White, he revealed that he has Meccano and it is still in use. I was born in 1946. I had quite a large set, much of it in Blue and Silver and inherited from an Uncle. There was also a good quantity of the Red/Green, again either inherited or purchased second hand. During the 50's the collection expanded with more gear wheels, road wheels and electric motors.

It was from Meccano that "Righty Tighty" and "Lefty Loosey" became instinctive. It provided an insight into such things as structure strength, levers, fulcrums and gearing.

I have added a Poll. Did you have Meccano ?

I still have mine (second hand in the early 60's), and recently was given a large box full in good condition to put with it for the grandkids to use.

Do you think those lattice wings will provide enough lift

I have hundreds of standard cheese head bolts but these cap heads are from a new Meccano set that my wife bought me.

I was given my first set by my Granny when I was a small child. She got into trouble for spending £5 (which bought a fairly big set in 1960). I was her favourite grandson and remained so until her passing.

I have a full size set in the garage!!!

The wings have lift. You lift the plane up and pretend it can fly! Embarassed

I have a few elderly MECCANO (Magazines).
That's where I get most of my jokes.

While I had my own sets (including that lovely box of gears) I inherited a lot which was gold in colour. What period would that have been from?

Meccano threads are a really odd size; 5/32" whitworth, coincidentally this is the same thread used in older fuel tanks where a round Smiths sender is fitted as seen on many British vehicles.

If anyone can point me to a supplier of cheese head 5/32" Whitworth screws I'd be grateful as we regularly get asked for them.

I've got some Meccano in the loft somewhere, but I don't do anything with it now. I remember getting it for Christmas, and being really into it for a while. I got a new set, and an older set in what must have been a home-made wooden box. I do see bits of it on car boot sales from time to time, but manage to resist buying it (which is unusual for me, given some of the junk I've bought on car boot sales).

Have you tried Clerkenwell Screws? I haven't used them for years but they were very good.

When I was struggling to get the correct-sized screws to hold expansion cards into PCs, I got a box from Vulcan Fasteners in Stone.

To reduce drag slacken the bolts and turn the struts 90deg out-board, then re-tighten so they don't come loose in flight.
