Hi all,
Please can anyone help me with my smoking Humber?
I have been restoring a 1965 Humber Imperial which has been an absolute pig at every turn but I am finally getting there (I Think) The engine now starts fine but gives out a lot of smoke from the breather Has anybody got any ideas on this and possible solutions. Now I am getting on a bit and find it difficult to carry out large jobs like taking the engine out. but I hope it will not come to that.
All help will be much appreciated
Thanks in anticipation

That's the classic symptom for worn piston rings, but perhaps, if the engine has been standing for some years, it could be that the rings are just gummed-up. More running may cure the problem, especially if you can source a supply of upper-cylinder lubricant like Redex to ease the process.

common with old engines and worn piston rings or issues with PVC valve! check valve and breather pipes are clear and working first. then we might want a compression test both wet and dry. compare significant differences between wet and dry ( more than say 30 psi) point to worn rings.bear in mind valves may not be 100% sealing though . even worn valve seals will allow oil to be drawn into cylinders and burnt increasing pollution but mainly not easily visible ( old Ford engines had this a lot eg Pinto units where seals hardened with time .heat /oil )

Gonna try Redex as well for the incoming Imperial project. It has been sitting for at least 5 years. Need to finish installing the brake kit and bilstein shocks on the Silverado this week before we can clear the garage and take the Imperial in.
