I want to pass along a tip on fixing cracks in rubber runningboard mats. This is not for a show car restoration, but more for an oily-rag driver. My '32 Chevy's mats were cracked where they curved around the outer/upper running board area. A new set of mats cost around $550.

As an interim fix, I squeezed some black Permatex into the cracks, let it set up, then dressed it smooth with very fine sand paper. (I wish I had taken before and after photos to show the result.) Be sure the Permatex is completely set up before sanding.

Given the good result, I won't be buying new mats anytime soon.

That's a good tip. Perhaps we should have a sticky thread for these little gems.

Incidentally, I find Permatex "Ultra Black" to be better than most for making silicone gaskets.
