By coincidence just on Monday evening I was listening to a webinar on the air crash that killed Alan Blumlein when he was working on H2S radar in a Halifax. With all the cam follower gear exposed in this engine it is very appropriate.
What killed Blumlein's Halifax was a loose adjustment nut on a cam follower that resulted in the shank of a valve breaking at the narrow part for the collets. This allowed the valve to remain open and the exhaust from the cylinder then ignited the whole of the induction tract ably supplied with fuel by the supercharger. It didn't take long for this serious fire to burn through to adjacent fuel tanks and eventually destroy the integrity of the wing. Unfortunately the fire destroyed the wing quicker than it was possible to lose height for an emergency landing.

Try as I might, I just don't get it.
Then again I don't get modern art or discordant music. If I gives pleasure to others then it must be credible. |

I don't have any "yard art" but I confess to a little desk art. Vandal that I am I sawed this off the remains of a Griffon that were embedded in a Scottish hillside.

I've a compressor off a Griffon in the garage, so in time we'll be able to assemble a complete engine
Do you know the history of your piston?

I have a sodium filled valve from the same engine and a fraction of cylinder head with valve seat. So we're getting there.
I acquired this piston about 50 years ago and I seem to remember my brother-in-law who is a PPL identified the crash at the time but looking on the web I can't see it. There is a Hawker Typhoon crash that is quite near to the location but that had a Napier Sabre engine with a 5" bore my piston has 6" bore.

I returned to the site perhaps 30 years ago but couldn't see any trace of anything.
