So, finally I have got around to starting a proper thread on the restoration of out 1942 Commer. I have posted quite a bit already on different threads regards the work we have already done, getting her started was a big task and now for the last month or so we have had to drop the gearbox and bellhousing because the starter kept jamming.

We found the starter would jam up regularly and had to remove it every time which is just not practical. The last time it was off I thought lets have a look at the starter ring which you can feel through the starter aperture.

My word, it shocked me, the condition of the teeth are awful. So there and then we decided, big task that it is to remove and replace.

Again Speedy Spares have been more than helpful. We have found that a Commer Q4 should have 146 teeth on the starter ring and a 10 tooth starter pinion. The Commer Q2 should have 115 teeth on the ring and a 9 tooth starter pinion.

Guess what.. we have a Q4 starter ring and a Q2 starter pinion! Also, when removed we found the ring to be welded on in 3 places and between the welds it had bowed! Its an old fix, probably a wartime in the field fix.

You can see one of the welds in the pic.

And in this pic you can see the awful state of the teeth and the gap around the ring where it has bowed!

Look forward to following progress, as you say the ring gear was looking a little secondhand.

It reminds me of the VW beetle / Camper starter & ring combinations - of which there seem to be an infinite number... Rolling Eyes

We thought the ring would be loose but it wasnt. Where it had warped it wouldn't come off straight if you know what I mean. We got it most of the way off by trying to tap it evenly round with a hammer and flat chisel.

I remember drilling the face of the old rings and splitting it with a cold chisel.
Hope all goes well with the new installations.

We pretty much did that Peter, we tapped the ring off quite a way but it wouldnt come off.
So, I used a small hacksaw to cut between two teeth and then a few good hits with the cold chisel split it.

The new old stock ring arrived today from Speedy Spares.

Perhaps a check that it doesn't fit when everything is at ambient. The inside of the ring may well have bevels with one being ever so slightly larger than the other. That should be the leading side when fitting.

Whilst waiting for the starter ring to be done we have busied ourselves with stripping the oil and petrol can mounts from the body. We also reved the rear wings.

The plan is to lift the body off soon so to give access to the chassis and so we can replace the rotten timbers whilst its off the lorry.

I presume putting the engine and gearbox together will be easier without the body ?

It will be a little easier mainly due to giving us more light and also re-attaching the propshaft which is quite heavy. That can be lowered in on the engine crane from above.

Hopefully this works, this is a short video showing the engine running prior to us removing the gearbox. It took an awful lot of time and effort to get her running, but its worth it. At this stage the exhaust wasn't tightened up so there was plenty of air hissing but she sounded quite sweet.
