Another less obvious ignition trouble is poor earthing of the the contact breaker. If it is mounted on a metal plate then the screws securing the plate to the distributor body might be loose or if it uses a Bakelite base plate for the contacts then the internal wiring within the Bakelite is a common failure that is easily fixed by adding a surface wire.

Thanks for that Peter, I think I might pop down this morning and have a look under the distributor cap.

So, lots of work going on with the Commer now. Last week we spent a day removing the wooden body in order to rub down the chassis. Also, the body is quite rotten so we will work on it off the lorry which gives us better access.

The chassis is very short on the lorry and as you can see is fitted with a very hefty and original wartime towbar.

So, got the windscreen out of the lorry only to find that not only is the screen cracked in 3 places but he bottom from is rusted so bad its just crumbling away.

It will be very difficult to replicate as it has 2 internal lips to take the rubber extrusion and the profile is very small.

They got interesting products there! My uncle might be interested for his new Morris Minor project. I'll visit him this week after the installation of the headache rack and hard tonneau cover plus the led lights on the pick-up truck.

Still no joy finding a replacement screen so after a good clean up we think we can attempt a pretty good repair. At least then that will buy us some time and the truck vould be used whilst still looking for a replacement.

I plan to fabricate new sections of frame, the worst rot is in 2 to 3 inch sections. Cut these out and then I will then stitch the new repair sections in place.

I have worked out a way to fabricate the lip sections of the frame that hold the rubber in, I will make a few test pieces first before I cut anything out of the original. It will not be straightforward but its worth giving it a go, we fabricated some really quite complicated sections on the previous Commer.

The aim is to have the chassis and all running gear primed in the next few weeks. Then we start properly looking the welding and fabricating required on the cab.

Finally, the chassis and running gear is all primed now. I am getting the top coats mixed specially for the wartime brown that was used in 1942.

After all the issues we had with welders I went back and bought a Clarke MigMate gasless unit. Its a very good hobby welder.

The lorry is now in the shed so working on it is a lot easier, the lower edge of the cab was very rotten so thats had new metal fabricated and welded in, it hasn't been fettled in yet but is in place.

Before...

After...ready for the welds to be fettled/dressed in.
