I have a couple of specialists take a look at my car and both have told me that
the rear of the car is not strong enough to take a tow bar or caravan towing.
They did say that somebody could fit something but t could do damage to the leaf spring eyes and even pull out the springs. I am asking for advise from a person who has done the job on a similar car. |

I'm no expert so my advice is probably worthless but I would assume that the towing bracket would be attached to the chassis legs and not to the rear axle so I fail to understand how such an arrangement causes any more stress on the springs or their attachment points than would be caused by a very steep hill or emergency braking.

I would have thought that the object of a tow bracket has 2 main functions:
Firstly to provide a physical method to attach a trailer securely.
Secondly to strengthen the vehicle to ensure it can absorb the additional loads and stresses.
Clearly the maxim load would affect the design, unfortunately once a tow bar is fitted its impossible to govern the trailer load, this is probably why commercial tow bar manufacturers may not want to get involved.
I would agree with Peter about fitting to the chassis, however many pre war vehicles have a weak spot on the top of the chassis, where the chassis curves over the rear axle, its an area that tends to fail without the additional trailered load. Clearly with some bespoke fabrication any (or most) challenges can be engineered satisfactorily.
Wit the light load that you propose too tow, I'd have thought it must be possible to get something fabricated?
