A curate's egg!

The car stuff was fine but when it came to the Harrier Jump Jet it fell over in my estimation. They were concerned that a couple of tyres were losing pressure so firstly they thought "it might the tyre valve". Well fair enough, but do they think to put a little soap solution (or even spittle) on the valve to test it ? No! They simply change it. So they may have solved the problem or maybe not. They just don't know.

I "gooogglled it", (Anyone ever have "Encylopedia Brittannica")... I presume this is a UK TV show so I will have to wait until one of the cable networks picks it up. Does it/has it /will be.. going down the "cliffhanger" route. ?

I saw the programme and really quite liked it.

I have fond memories of the track from my teens but then it was empty and abandoned. Years later my wife and I visited but when we went the Brooklands Museum had only just got going. It was good to see the old place again but things have changed a lot.!

When it comes to War Planes I tend to loose interest. ( I took the Harrier tyre valve thing with a pinch of salt.)

I liked the Frazer Nash... but I thought the replacement first gear chain was just as sloppy as the one he took off!! However, I thought the vintage car racing was a bit different. Most enjoyable.

Isn't that 1904 Siddeley just wonderful? I think it's amazing that they have the first car to take to the track in the hands of the Ethel Locke King. She must have been an incredible woman by any standards.

I have been waiting for this series to start and look forward to seeing the next episode. I just know my Dad would have liked seeing the old motor bikes. Like many young chaps at the time he was unable to afford to enter the competitions but was a total enthusiast with a Norton CS1 (Manx racer.) It was interesting to see an example of the "Brooklands Can" like the one Geoff Duke gave him before WW2.

Overall a most enjoyable programme I thought.

I quite enjoyed it, but I did think the voiceover guy was starting to edge into over-dramatising stuff, and perhaps egging the volunteers into doing the same. Not as badly as in some other programmes, but it's only the first episode so hopefully it will settle down.

The Harrier section was a good example, talking about how all the weight is on the extreme ends of the wings, and about being worried if there's a cracking sound, instead of taking the opportunity to say that's why the volunteers regularly check the tyre pressures. As Peter said, they could have tried a few things to see if it was a valve leak or a bead leak, or something else - but maybe they did, and it just wasn't interesting enough to take time on the TV.

I can't quite remember what it was, but something the voiceover said about the carb on "Daisy" didn't seem right to me. I may just not have been listening properly, and am not a carb expert at the best of times.

It'll be interesting to see the rest of it, even though most of the stuff featured is a lot older than my period of interest.

"Yesterday" freeview 26, Tuesday evening at 8pm. Probably repeated a few times as well, if it's anything like B&C.

I quite enjoyed that, proper cars and aeroplanes being looked after and used, what's not to like - apart from mild jeopardy which I can live with. Anything that might encourage others to get involved with museums which are struggling in many cases right now, has to be encouraged.

One thing that could have been mentioned was the incredible work that they had done in moving an aircraft hanger. It had been built across the finishing straight which can now be used.

On a similar (in that it's not packed with false drama) subject, I've been enjoying "The Yorkshire Auction House", 11pm Wednesday nights on "Really". Some interesting stuff coming out of lofts and sheds.

I've a caught a couple of episodes of that, a lot of what they cleared was car-boot fodder at best but they did turn up a few interesting nuggets.

Re the Brooklands programme, I was surprised to spot a few clips of "three-quarter" midget car racing which looked very US as opposed to Weybridge.

I think it was just to give an impression of madness on an oval track.

Just for the record; Brooklands Museum like to say the track which opened in 1907 were the first purpose built racing circuit in the World.

In fact, the first was Aspendale Racecourse in Australia which was a slight banked Pear shaped track opened in 1906.

Brooklands was the first with high speed banking.
