I wonder why he chose a Land Rover? (over a gun carriage; which is what I would have thought he might have had.)

He chose a Land Rover because they were a great part of his motoring history.

I read, that an identical model stood quietly in the wings, just in case.

His Uncle Louis also chose a Land Rover for his coffin carrier.

Having owned a number of LR products over the decades you could call me an aficionado & wouldn't dismiss one of the breed for my final journey, but I would want a V8 not a godamn diesel ... so inappropriate for such an occasion.
I suspect the driver of the TD5 at HRH's funeral shut the engine off on the long downhill section as everything seemed to go quiet for a while.

Assume it was a 101 V8?
The military don't tend to prioritise fuel economy in their specifications !
Years ago my hobby was US built WW2 vehicles that consumed petrol like it was going out of fashion, but then if you want to enjoy & show a vehicle it's a state of mind when it comes to running costs.
Bung the nozzle into the tank, hold the trigger & don't keep looking at the readout Shocked

If I recall, they were not the easiest of vehicles to work on but, again, if you are an enthusiast for the marque such things just come with the territory.

Some nice shots of a 101 forward control in use.

It would make an excellent second hand purchase "Very low mileage, only used to go to church on Sunday, one titled owner....."
