I haven't driven since Christmas, as I had a left eye Retinal Venous Occlusion overnight, since then I have had 3 injections in that eye at 4 week intervals and a set of scan photos last week, now waiting to have a word with my consultant.
As an ex-instructor I am aware that I can drive with monocular vision but I am waiting until instructors are able to work without masks being required in the car (I can't see anything when I have a mask on because of misting on my glasses)
I have a local instructor, that I trust, to check me out for my speed and distance assessment using only one eye. |
That is miserable for you, Penman. I had cataract surgery on both eyes recently... but the anaesthetic failed on the last one (not just me but someone else that day who also had the bad batch) . It was horrendous but I knew it would be a quick op so just put up with it.
I asked for compensation but they have gone rather quiet.... 
I understand that there are masks available that can avoid glasses being misted up. |

| Pinch the mask onto your nose and put the glasses over the mask, not under as some do. it works fine for me. I've had Lasik to correct my vision (I was terribly short sighted) and since then had 20/20 vision until both cataracts came along. The left eye is a bit down, but the right still 20/20 but for safety's sake I wear glasses to drive so I have both at full beam, so to speak. |

Well, I took the Firenza home at lunchtime as I was half-way through a job on the modern, then went to get some fuel on the way back. I saw a few other classics, not a massive number but then I wasn't out for long.

We had a good sort out down the workshop so made room to get the big Hillman out.
We took her for a nice drive into Wells and parked for an ice cream in front of the beautiful Cathedral.

I had been out on Saturday in the modern and decided that there was still too much salt on the roads.

I had to drive the Austin down to Cornwall on Sunday, from Lancashire, so just a "little" drive out! Virtually no classics about. A Mercedes 230SL on the M5 and two Renault 4s and an AH3000 on the A39 was the grand total. I felt somewhat disappointed.

That is the very big downside of trying to keep your car in showroom condition.
For me, that will never happen. Whenever the sun is out and the roads are dry, I do not hesitate to take whatever car for a drive. Sure, in the end the car might get some rust over the years and shock horror maybe even a scratch or two. But in the mean time I have the pleasure to use the cars as much as I like it.
Rust, scratches and such can always be repaired later if really necessary. Luckily I am not a “showroom condition” man.
Each to their own of course, do with your car as you want.

My car is very far from in showroom condition but I did have it out a few weeks previously and it had turned wet. When I looked it over on Saturday there were quite a lot of places on the bumpers and wheel spinners that were stained with rust. A small hole in the chrome and you get a big crust. It took me several hours of scrubbing to get rid of the rust stains and on one wheel the hub was encrusted with white salt residue. It's a pain cleaning wire wheels getting your fingers round the spokes.
As it happens the reason for driving 100 miles in the modern on Saturday was to buy a pressure washer because my wife wanted the patio slabs cleaned. She was threatening to employ a professional and my thoughts turned to Flanders & Swann "Oh it all makes work for the working man to do...." No doubt the professional would clean the slabs and I'd then find that my drains were blocked with earth.
Many years ago I had bought a pressure washer for car washing but took it back to the shop because it was useless but this time I took advice from a friend who used to service commercial pressure washers. Anyway the bottom line is that it cleaned the slabs very well but it didn't really meet my secondary hope of cleaning wire wheels. It didn't clean around where the spokes connect to the rim although it did take the paint off in other areas where a tiny amount of corrosion had caused a blister.

we took the consul out to a cafe on the somerset levels in the afternoon.
lovely day but no other classics seen until we got to 1 mile from home! |
