I posted before regarding my grandsons interest in vintage / post vintage cars.
He snubbed my then modern classic that I invited him to have a look over, my
1998 Fiat Coupe. Would you like to look over it I enquired, ‘no thank you’ was his blunt reply !!! He will be eight years old in June therefore still has some learning of social skills perhaps Very Happy
Anyhow fast forward one year to he other day when a visit was permitted.
I have a new vintage car in the garage, would you like to have a look over it?
‘oooh yes please’ into the garage he gently caresses his hand over a front wing, ‘ beautiful, just beautiful’ as he walked around admiring Very Happy
Perhaps I have a space in my Will for the next custodian of my Austin Very Happy

There is hope for us all enthusiasts.

That's very encouraging indeed!

Yes indeed it is, neither son or daughter have e pressed an interest in wishing to take on the car when I’m motoring on cloud nine. If grandson continues his interest he has a nice surprise coming to him, hopefully some way off yet Wink

Nice to hear, I am all for encouraging our kids to take up an interest.

My 9 year old asked at the weekend if he could be taught how to spray when we do the chassis of our Commer in the next few weeks. I always think its nice when they take an interest that isn't forced upon them.

Agreed, forcing ones own hobby interest onto a child is a recipe for rejection. Our grandson has a keen interest in steam as well as vintage cars, steam started with the character steam cartoons and has developed from there. Wether these interests will be sustained over the long term only time will tell, but the signs are good.
We will still need engineers to work on our heritage after all.

Be careful what you wish for:

When my daughter was about 3, she was watching me doing some panel beating on the MGA, turned my back for a second and spotted her with hammer in hand wandering towards my modern!...

Caught up with her in the nick of time Very Happy

Yikes, ould have been a disaster!

Reminds me years back I was painting an internal door at home, time for a cuppa so simply placed the lid on the pot of paint loosely and went downstairs for the break. Didn’t reckon on my then 5 year old ‘helping me’ paint the door.
Shocked

This was a disaster --

Many years ago my brother had just bought a new C class Mercedes estate. He is not the sort who is often seen with bucket and sponge but it so happened on one of the rare occassions when he did wash his car he was called away to the telephone. Unfortunately for him and the car the call was prolonged. You may imagine the scene on his return to find his 5 year old daughter proudly announcing she had helped - indeed she had and with a pan scourer everywhere she could reach!

Repairs were not cheap.

This afternoon my 9 year old wanted to help on the Commer, we spent a few hours rubbing down the bonnet side panels. He actually did a very good job and was really pleased with it.

He has his own mask and gloves and he now wants me to bring more panels home from the yard, apparently he can sand quicker than I can!?!
