This one arrived a few moments ago, along with a back story .... the K registration is Liverpool, 1903.
-----
I came across your fantastic site whilst researching an old number plate and I was wondering if you can help me?
I'll try and keep a long story short...
My Dad was forced to shield earlier this year and decided to spend that time tracing his family tree - he was given up by his parents in 1955 aged 5 and knew very little about his ancestry. After a bit of digging and help from relatives he had reconnected with, he discovered a picture of his Great Grandparents posing in a car. There was no date on the back and no mention of the type of car they were driving other than it belonged to the family and the registration number was K4. My Dad was a little blown away by that, as the number plate suggests his great grandfather might have had owned of the first registered cars in Liverpool.
As a bit of a car enthusiast he is now determined to find out what that car was but so far he has been unable to identify it - the original photo is too faded and despite having it digitally restored we still can't work out what the car was.
Would you know if there is a way of finding out what a vehicle is from a registration that old? He's 70 in a few weeks and I'd love to be able to give him an answer for his birthday. I have attached below a copy of the photo in case that helps too.

How about a 1905 Darracq "Flying Fifteen"?

I haven't established the make as yet but I would put it slightly later than 1903. |

Hi
K was first issued in Dec 1903. It was the Liverpool B area which, if anyone knows what that was would give a pointer to whereabouts his G Grandparents lived, alternatively if he has already found them on the 1901 and/or 1911 census he might be able to tell us where Liverpool B was.
Were owners allowed to transfer plates in those earliest years? _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

The car - whatever it is - has a rear entrance tonneau - a style of bodywork sometimes called Roi Des Belges; the restricted access dictated by chain drive to the rear wheels.
Witness a small door to the front passenger side - which looks like a later addition.
I also noticed that there is no windscreen; evidence of an early car and perhaps the reason why the 'driver' is wearing goggles!
Of course, notwithstanding what is written on the back of the photograph, it is always possible that this is no more than a holiday momento. Professional photographers would often use a large, prestigious - if obsolete - car as a 'prop' and tourists would pay to be photographed in it...
In this case the gent in the passenger seat may be well dressed but his wearing of a cloth cap hardly befits ownership of such a vehicle in the early 1900s. |

With no great conviction, how about a 1908 FIAT?

The same Post Office in 1955. Evocative picture of an Austin A30 on L plates.
I can't identify the car but to me it looks like an older vehicle which has been re bodied. Close examination reveals some antiquated coach lining on the bonnet. Also, there is evidence that this was an open drive car as the right hand controls have been skirted round by the later body where there would also have been a spare wheel mounted in the running board. |

Hi
No names on the caption, the whole article is actually trying to ID events and people.
This is Montagu at a sometime in the '50s.

Couple of photos turned up on Nottinghamshire nostalgia page yesterday. Can any of you help identify what these are. Is RR a Nottingham registration?
This second one has a plethora of motors parked outside the Castle.

Yes, RR is a Nottingham registration number. The car in the foreground is a 1927 Morris Cowley - an early flat-nosed car with a nickel silver radiator; the car in the background I suspect is a circa 1922 Chevrolet. _________________ in the garage: 1938 Talbot Ten Airline
