surely this must be a modern classic, first of the fwd escorts, with such sporty versions as the original non injection XR3, then the first 'modern RS, the RS1600i, and the RS Turbo???

bit late for me really, but yeah the original XR3 must be becoming scarce I suppose. I remember the sales ad for them when they came out, with Sir Jackie thrashing one around a track/proving ground somewhere

The early Golfs are acquiring 'classic' status, so why not the Escort Mk3, Fiat Strada/Ritmo, Renault 5 and so on? The tuned (GTI) etc versions are guaranteed 'classic' status, but will anyone preserve bog-standard versions too? hopefully yes, as they would have been even more common a sight than the souped-up versions in their day.

I know of a garage on the top of a moor with loads of golfs, never really looked at them as am allways driving past and just remember seeing them out of the corner of my eye.

problem with a lot of this semi-modern stuff is that it was made in the zillions and often last longer than the cars of the 60s/70s might have done, therefore could take many years to get even remotely rare.

On the flip side, fashions change much more quickly now and still-serviceable cars get junked simply because they no longer look new, or 'cool', even if they have life left in 'em, which could deplete the numbers of more recent cars quicker than perhaps should be the case
