THIS IS MY FIRST POST, SO HELLO AND BEST REGARDS TO ONE AND ALL.
I HAVE A '53 ANGLIA E494A, HER NAME IS GRETA.
SHE HAS BEEN IN THE GARAGE OVER THE WINTER AND NOW DOES NOT WISH TO START.
I HAVE REPLACED THE DIZZY CAP AND ROTOR ARM, RE-SET THE POINTS, NEW PLUGS. I HAVE POWER AT THE POINT BUT NO SPARK AT THE PLUGS, CAN ANYONE GIVE ME ANY POINTERS BEFORE CALLING IN THE PROFESSIONALS.

Hi welcome along!
If you have sparking at the points, but not at the plugs, have a look at the brush in the centre of the dizzy cap (perhaps pull it down a little on the spring) and check that its making contact with the centre of the rotor arm ok. They can work their way back into the cap over time and lose contact with the rotor. Is the cap correct? if you have the old one, put that back and see if it makes a difference

Hi Martin, my suggestion is to remove the points and clean the contact faces with either a points file or some light abrasive tape/paper. Ignition points sometimes get corroded when left unused for a period of time. If that makes no difference, replace or have tested the condenser. They can short circuit internally if the insulation layers break down, but it is unusual. Also pays to check for obvious things like broken or touching low tension circuit wiring, good luck, Col. |

Hi before you swap stuff there are a couple of simple tests;
Do you have a voltmeter? or can you borrow one?, if so just do these simple tests;
Measure the battery voltage with ignition on.
Measure the coil voltage with the points closed
You shouldn’t have more than 0.5 volt difference, there will always be a small voltage drop across the points this is normally0.5 to 0.8v , you can measure this with the ignition on and the points closed.
An additional 2v drop on the LT side will reduce the output of the coil by 2000 -3000 volts ! that will affect your spark! especialy when the engine is being cranked from the battery, in this scenario you could only be getting 50% of the coil output. Engines in this condition may start with a blast of "Easy Start" down the carb, and then will run but you will not have cured the fault.
These simple tests will tell you much about the state of the Low Tension side of the ignition. I have seen loads of none starters or poor runners with LT faults, like as Kaybee says dirty contacts, and folks change everthing with out resolving the fault.
For ref I enclose a scan of the Crypton Test, note the order that things are tested in, this is done so that you eliminate faults in the correct order without jumping to conclusions.

Gentleman, she purrs like a kitten.
Not sure what the cure was exactly. i fully charged the battery before i tried her last night, swapped the dizzy cap for the old one, re-set the points, jiggled all the leads. she fired. she stalled. she fired. she stalled. she fired, she ran. i took her down the road and she kept stalling. i re-set the points again, popped the new dizzy cap on and she ran like a new 'un.
good old girl.
the new plugs are Champion 81Y's, i think, are these ok?.
many thanks for the tips, she's going for her ticket on Thursday, so fingers crossed, she may be out and about at the wedekend, weather permitting.

GRETA is a 1953 E494A FORD ANGLIA.
8HP, 933cc.
We bought her last June, off EBAY. She was then living in Bradford, and had done so for at least 10 years, so some of you may already know her. I only got use her a few times last year as we normally attend 1940's shows countrywide and most are a bit far for her. Hopefully this year i will use her more. She desreves to be out and about, i did not want something i was scared to take on the open road, but i did want reliability, and Greta fits the bill perfectly. I believe the best may to preserve is to use. i have an old log book which says she has also lived in Edingburgh and Birmingham, so she's been about.
i think she's Ludlow Green, can anyone tell me the best place to get paint, as i want to change some rubber seals on her and i will probably need to touch her up a bit after.
i have a few spares which may be of interest to someone. i also need few bits to tidy her up.
is it ok to trade on this site ???
hope to put a few pics of her on the site soon, hopefully someone will like to see them.
We also have a 1959? Penguin caravan which i have smartened up, we use it at shows. i tried to get it sealed last year and refurbished the inside, a good paint job is in order in the summer. maybe someone would like to see some pics of this too???. unfortunately we pull this with a modern Rover 200. (sorry!!!!).
