I have just purchased a 1973 MKIV Spitfire and changed the driveshaft UJs as they were noisy. The new ones come with grease nipples and I re-assembled and refitted everything on one side and went to use the grease gun to discover that I could not fit it on due to its location. When I did the other side I greased it before re-fitting.

The old ones had the threaded plugs and have been told that you remove the plugs, fit the grease nipples and then re-fit the plugs. Question is can you buy either extensions to the existing ones to make them longer or buy longer ones so the UJs can be greased.

Thanks

Hi Kev,
i see you had a long day yesterday, what gets in the way of the grease nipples? Could an angled grease gun head be used?

Hi Kev,

Just to make sure we're both talking about the same part - this is the rear driveshaft UJ joints adjacent to the differential?

I used to have a 1975 1500 Spitfire so I had a look through my Haynes manual for it and there's no mention of greasing the UJ's in the routine servicing - I wonder if they should have been "sealed for life" ones you should have perhaps fitted.

However I also remember that you used to be able to buy grease nipples that were very long for situations just like this, but where you'll get them I'm not sure, probably one of the specialist classic vehicle parts suppliers. The only thing that I'll mention, and please forgive me if you realised this - if you do get long grease nipples you'll almost certainly have to remove them after greasing and replace the plugs back in so as not to foul the joint when it is in use.

Hopefully you'll get more advice from the rest of the guys that'll clarify things better.
