Hi Rick, Great looking Cars, I agree you had to have both really, it made sense, why have one when you can have two?
As regarding the light switch, depending on the year of vehicle, they were fitted with different types. My one has a basic, quite sturdy looking chrome Toggle switch, some had a pull switch. Here's a link to one with a pull switch:

My J40,(beginning of this thread), has unfortunately got to wait, what with the Pop engine Re-build and being made redundant from work
Also at the moment I have nowhere to carry on with it which is annoying as I really want to get on with it.
All I have to do is a tiny bit of welding,( there are some slight perforations in the rear wings & battery tray), then some minor dents, prepare and paint, the rest of the parts are done, all painted ready to go on.
As soon as I can get on with it I will post an updated
I don't know if the club is still going, but they can give the History on most cars,(ie date of manufacture, which Shop/ Dealer it was originally ordered by), except, I think for the earlier ones as the records were lost.
Anyway a couple of Beauties you have there Rick, get the Wax & Hoover out for a full Valet
All the Best,
Greg

Thanks for the info Greg, the cars came with a few odd bits n pieces including a couple of re-chromed escutcheons to fit on some switches, suggesting that perhaps they both had the pull type of switch. I should have something in the garage that'll look period, probably like the toggle switch link that you sent.
The bodyshell on yours looked great after sandblasting, whereabouts did it need repair work?

Hi Rick, it has small perforations at the base of the rear wings and in the battery tray. I should think at some stage the batteries were left in place and then leaked, causing the corrosion. |

While RJ was out in the garage getting grubby, young Harley (and Nellie the Elephant) decided to try out the red car for size..

Rick has competition for the red one now, I have a feeling Young Harley has his eyes on both! hehe
Great picture.

SHOCK NEWS
Rick breaks the habits of a lifetime and buys two cars in good condition needing only minor restoration.

So Rick, linking in another thread, are you going to keep these vehicles on the standard 9 volts, or uprate to 12v for better lighting etc.? |

Hi
You forgot the spot lights, badge bars and badges to make them look like the 12" to 1' one. |

Rick wrote: | My shopping list for the J40s is as follows:
2x rear bumpers
2x headlamp lens sets
1x battery (what type did they originally have?)
I've seen the bumpers and lenses for sale online, I'll probably order some of the latter soon, and keep my eye open for bumpers over the next few months in case I come across one or two

Hi Rick, the batteries were 2 of the Eveready 4.5 volt rectangular ones, (code number 126 ), with 'screw' terminals. These were wired in series to get 9 volts.
As far as I can make out these are no longer available, most people use re-chargeable batteries and opt for 12 volts.
I have been looking for 2 original batteries just to copy the casing etc, then there is the option of using virtually anything on the inside.
So if anyone does know where ther are some original types, I'd be interested to know
Hope this helps,
Greg |
